Barons Slip Away in 69-55 Loss to William Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Brewton-Parker Men's Basketball battled against William Carey (Miss.) on Thursday night in Hattiesburg.

The Barons (2-20, 1-9 SSAC) held tough for most of the game but slipped away from the Crusaders (7-9, 2-6 SSAC) late in the second half, falling 69-55.

How It Happened

The game opened rather slow as the Crusaders scored at 17:55 to open followed by a leveling response from the Barons moments later. William Carey controlled the scoreline early in the opening minutes of the game, advancing to a 9-2 lead with 14:39 left in the first half. A quick five-point effort from Brewton-Parker knocked the deficit down to just two points with William Carey answering back roughly two minutes later.

Brewton-Parker pulled within one point off a jumper from Bryce Wilson with 11 minutes remaining. The Crusaders bounced from leading by three and by one serval times as both teams traded shots. After going up by five, William Carey's lead began to diminish late into the half as the Barons recaptured the lead off a layup from Chance Hatcher, leading 20-19 with 3:43 left.

William Carey took little time to respond with a three-pointer to lead by two points. Two free throws from Jeffery Huff at the 1:55 mark leveled the score yet again, but the Crusaders recorded another three to lead 25-22. TJ Taylor closed out the half with a layup to pull the deficit down to just one point at the break, as William Carey led 25-24.

The Crusaders began the second half with two free throws nearly three minutes in to lead by three points. Brewton-Parker moved to the driver's seat, going on an 8-0 run to lead 32-27 with 15:53 left to play. Unfortunately, another trey ball from the crusaders produced a run to quickly diminish the Barons' lead. William Carey utilized a 12-0 run to pull away to a seven-point lead over Brewton-Parker with 12:24 on the clock.

 A three-pointer from Emmanuel Green appeared to be the beginning of a spark for Brewton-Parker but the Barons were unable to produce enough momentum to get any closer than four points for the remainder of the game. The Crusaders first broke into the double-digit mark with 10:37 remaining and never looked back.

 A three-point play from Taylor pulled BPC back under double-digits but WCU came back with another answer. At 6:51, a layup from Floyd Davis assisted in pulling BPC back into the single digits but WCU outscored the Barons 16-12 in the final six minutes to hold on to the victory.

Inside The Statistics

  • Taylor led the scoring for BPC with 12 points while Green picked up 11.
  • Davis led the team off the glass with six rebounds.
  • As a team, Brewton-Parker shot for 32.3% (20-of-62) from the field, 15% (3-of-20) from distance, and 57.1% (12-of-21) from the charity stripe.
  • William Carey gathered four players in double figures with the leader gathering 13.
  • The Crusaders dominated off the glass, outrebounding the Barons 43-29.

  • William Carey gave up 29 turnovers while Brewton-Parker gave up 16.
  • The Crusaders bettered the Barons leading 25-21 in points off turnovers as well as 35-19 in bench points.
