Barons Downed by No. 14 Stillman with Late Bucket in Final Seconds; BPC Falls 62-61

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Brewton-Parker Men's Basketball wrapped up its weekend SSAC road trip with a contest against No. 14-ranked Stillman (Ala.) in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The Barons (1-11, 0-4 SSAC) fell to the Tigers (7-1, 3-1 SSAC) 62-61 but Stillman needed a late bucket in the final seconds to thwart BPC's upset opportunity.

"We played our best game of the year tonight," Head Coach Stephen Birchfield said. "The guys played together, and we had great energy from start to finish. We also had several guys step up and make plays."

"We came up short because of execution errors," Birchfield mentioned. "Hard-fought games such as this one come down to the little things. If we continue to play at this level, we will learn to win."

How It Happened

Brewton-Parker opened the scoring with two free throws to capture control of the scoreline early. Stillman Quickly responded with a three capture their first lead of the evening. The Barons reclaimed control and held onto the lead for the next few possessions.

After going up by three, Stillman leveled the score at 8-8 with just under 14 minutes left in the half. The Barons began building their lead back, going on a 7-1 run to lead by six points over the span of two minutes. Stillman's 5-0 run quickly pulled back within a one-point deficit by Brewton-Parker quickly pulled away to an eight-point lead off an 8-1 run with just over eight minutes to play.

The Barons' lead began slipping away as the Tigers managed to level and recapture the lead, leading 29-27 with three minutes to play. Brewton-Parker responded yet again with a 10-2 run to lead by six with 23 seconds left on the clock. One final score from Stillman, pulled the Tigers within three, giving BPC a 37-34 lead at the break.

To open the second half, Brewton-Parker scored five points and held off the Tigers to advance the lead to eight points. Stillman went on a 9-3 run to draw the deficit down to just one point with 13:25 left to play. The Tigers eventually captured the lead at the 10:37 mark before the Barons answered to reclaim the lead.

After a brief back-and-forth, BPC leveled the game at 51-51 with eight minutes to play but Stillman went up by five points with six minutes left on the clock. After scoring six consecutive points and holding off the Stillman offense, the Barons took the lead a three-point lead with just under four minutes left to play. A three-pointer from the Tigers leveled the game but a bucket from the Barons gave BPC a two-point lead with the final two minutes remaining.

With an upset on the line, Stillman managed to score a free throw to pull the game within one point. After a couple of missed chances on both ends of the floor, Stillman had the ball with just seconds left on the clock and the Tigers scored with just a second left for the Barons. Brewton-Parker was left with little time to answer as Stillman was able to slip away from the threat, winning 62-61.

Inside The Statistics

  • Brewton-Parker outshot Stillman from the field. The Barons shot for 42.6% (23-of-54) from the field while the Tigers shot for 36.7% (22-of-60).
  • Stillman had the advantage from three-point range as the Tigers shot for 27.6% (8-of-29) with Brewton-Parker shooting for 21.1% (4-of-19).
  • BPC also led from the charity stripe shooting for 84.6% (11-of-13) while Stillman shot for just 45.5% (10-of-22).
  • A total of three Barons scored double-digit figures with Bryce Wilson and Floyd Davis both scoring 13 points while Nic Pullum gathered 12 points on the evening.
  • As for rebounding, Stillman held the advantage 40-36. For BPC, Emmanuel Green recorded seven boards to lead the Barons with TJ Taylor and Wilson recording six apiece.

Other Notables

  • Brewton-Parker gave up 19 turnovers with Stillman giving up 14. The Tigers took advantage of the opportunities as they outscored the Barons 23-10 off turnovers.
  • The bench was huge for Stillman, scoring 29 points. Trey Petty scored 21 points off the bench with only one starter for the Tigers in double-digit figures.
