Softball Secures Senior Day Sweep Over Stillman

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker softball hosted Stillman (Ala.) on Saturday afternoon for the 2022 Senior Day game, honoring five student-athletes.

Savannah Cook, Abby Cox, Natalie Hardy, Alexia Mays, and Erika Yatabe were the five seniors honored by the program along with Brewton-Parker College President, Dr. Echols.

The Lady Barons (16-12, 5-5 SSAC) swept the pair of games over the Tigers (12-20, 2-12 SSAC) with a 5-2 win in game one and an 11-3, five-inning win in game two.

Game 1 | Brewton-Parker 5, Stillman 2

Brewton-Parker opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning after a scoreless first inning. Josalin Whitten led with a single before Olivia Whitt connected on a sacrifice bunt which turned into an error for Whitten to round third base and score. Mays followed with a double to left-center field but was advanced on a ground out from Yatabe. The Lady Barons left Mays on base but closed the inning with the 1-0 lead.

Both teams were held scoreless for the third inning until Brewton-Parker tallied two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to lead 3-0. Cook led off the inning with a walk and two stolen bases until Whitt produced a sacrifice fly to score Cook. Mays notched a single followed by a single from Yatabe to put two runners on base. Cox connected for an RBI single to close out the inning.

In the top of the fifth, Stillman scored two runs to knock the deficit down to just one run. The Tigers utilized a single and a double to assist in scoring. Brewton-Parker responded in the sixth inning with a pair of runs to move the lead to 5-3. Whitten led with a walk followed by a single from Whitt. Mays then produced a sacrifice bunt to advance runners before Yatabe doubled up the middle to bring home both runners.

The Lady Barons shut the door on the Tigers in the seventh, forcing Stillman to leave two runners on while notching a hit to close out the game with the three-run lead.

Inside the Statistics

  • The Lady Barons outhit the Tigers 7-5 with Mays and Yatabe leading with two hits each.
  • Yatabe also led with the pair of RBIs while Whitten led with two runs scored.
  • BPC produced five stolen bases with Cook leading with two.
  • On the fielding side, Whitten recorded six putouts with Hardy recording three assists.
  • Hardy pitched a complete game allowing five hits and two earned runs. She struck out one batter in the process.

Game 2 | Brewton-Parker 11, Stillman 3

The Lady Barons struck early with a pair of runs scored in the first inning. Chloe Strickland singled to right field and stole second before advancing to third on a passed ball. She then crossed the dish from a double off the bat of Abbey Flowers. Madisen Nelson knocked in a run with a single to score Flowers for the 2-0 lead.

Cailyn Snellgrove scored in the bottom of the second to move the BPC lead to three runs, scoring from an RBI groundout by Alexis Bradshaw. BPC took advantage of the Stillman miscue, as Snellgrove led the inning off by reaching base via an error.

Brewton-Parker added a pair of runs in the third inning with MacKenzie Tripp producing a leadoff home run followed by Flowers scoring from a Snellgrove single late into the inning for the 5-0 lead. The Lady Barons tacked on five additional runs, jumping out to a 10-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Cox led by reaching on an error followed by a single from Strickland to move Cox to third. Strickland proceeded to steal second base while Cox stole home to score a run. Both Tripp and Nelson walked to load the base before BryAnn Pound reached base via an error to score both Tripp and Strickland. Both Nelson and Pound scored from singles until the inning was shut closed.

The Tigers began to produce some offense in the top of the fifth inning scoring three runs on three hits, but the Lady Barons managed to enforce the eight-run, run-rule with three singles and a run to win 11-3 and to secure the two-game series sweep.

  • Brewton-Parker outhit Stillman 12-6 with Flowers and Strickland both notching three hits each.
  • Both Flowers and Snellgrove led BPC with two RBIs apiece while Strickland produced three runs.
  • The Lady Barons tallied five stolen bases with Strickland and Cox both recording a pair.
  • Nelson led with eight putouts with trip notching four assists.
  • In the circle, Laykin Brown pitched for all five innings. She gave up three earned runs and allowed six hits. She walked two batters and struck out a pair as well.

Brewton-Parker returns to action on Wednesday with a trip to Cochran, Ga. to face Middle Georgia at 2 p.m. ET.
