Lady Barons Sweep Blue Mountain

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker softball hosted Blue Mountain (Miss.) on Friday afternoon to continue SSAC doubleheader play.

The Lady Barons (14-12, 3-5 SSAC) swept the pair of afternoon games against the Toppers (10-12, 1-9 SSAC) with a 5-1 win and a 7-3 win.

Game 1 | Brewton-Parker 5, Blue Mountain 1

The game opened with two scoreless innings from both teams. MacKenzie Tripp connected for a single in the first inning while Olivia Whitt produced a base hit in the second inning, but both base runners were left on.

Brewton-Parker managed to strike first, placing three runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning. Abby Cox was walked in leadoff position followed by a single from Alexis Bradshaw.

The pair of runners advanced on a passed ball before Chloe Strickland bunted to bring in Cox. Tripp lined out to the left fielder but was able to bring home Bradshaw for the second run of the inning just before Strickland scored from a passed ball for the third score.

Both teams were forced to leave a runner on base in the fourth inning after notching a single each. The Lady Barons found two additional runs in the fifth inning while producing two hits.

Bradshaw connected for a leadoff single, stealing second, and third after reaching base. Strickland reached on a walk just before a ground out from Tripp to score Bradshaw. Abbey Flowers produced a single to left field, bringing home Strickland for the 5-0 lead.

The Toppers finally answered with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Blue Mountain produced two hits and took advantage of a miscue from the Lady Barons which aided in the score. BPC was able to hold the Toppers back from producing anything else, sealing the 5-1 win in game one.

Inside the Statistics

  • The Lady Barons notched three more hits than the Toppers by outhitting BMC, 7-4.
  • Bradshaw and Strickland both scored a pair of runs while Bradshaw led with two hits.
  • Tripp led with two RBIs while Strickland and Flowers both recorded one.
  • Josalin Whitten produced eight putouts with Tripp recording six assists.
  • Natalie Hardy pitched all seven innings in the circle, allowing four hits and one run. She struck out two batters in the process.

Game 2 | Brewton-Parker 7, Blue Mountain 3

The Lady Barons opened the scoring with a solo run in the bottom of the first inning. Strickland connected for a single to left field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Strickland crossed the dish as Tripp was able to land at second base after a dropped fly ball.

Blue Mountain notched a pair of hits and received a free base on a walk, but fortunately for the Lady Barons, BMC left all three runners on base in the second inning. Brewton-Parker moved to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, scoring a run from Bradshaw. Bradshaw led with a double before advancing on a ground out and eventually coming home from an RBI line out from Tripp.

The fourth inning was a similar result for Blue Mountain as the Toppers left a pair of runners on while producing two hits. The Lady Barons added another run in the bottom of the inning. Cailyn Snellgrove scored after Madisen Nelson and BryAnn Pound led the inning off with back-to-back singles.

Blue Mountain began building up some offense with four hits and two runs scored across the fifth and sixth innings. The Toppers scored a run in both innings and notched a pair of hits in both as well to make the score 3-2 in favor of BPC.

Brewton-Parker answered quickly in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring four runs and notching four hits in the process. Pound, Snellgrove, Whitt, and Cox all scored while Pound, Whitt, Cox, and Strickland all produced a single.

The Toppers scored one final run in the top of the seventh to move the score to 7-3. After giving up a triple early in the inning, the Barons managed to hold on to the lead to sweep the series.

Inside the Statistics

  • The Toppers outhit the Lady Barons 10-9 in game two. Both Strickland and Pound led BPC with two hits apiece.
  • Both Bradshaw and Tripp notched two RBIs each while Snellgrove led with two runs scored.
  • Nelson led with 11 putouts while Whitt and Tripp both recorded three assists each.
  • Laykin Brown pitched all seven innings from the circle and gave up just two earned runs while striking out five batters and walking one.

Brewton-Parker returns to action tomorrow for Senior Day against Stillman (Ala.) at 1 p.m. ET.
