Softball Splits at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Brewton-Parker softball faced Talladega (Ala.) on the road on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Barons (12-12, 1-5 SSAC) split the doubleheader against the Tornadoes (8-8, 2-2 SSAC) with a game one loss, 3-1, and a game two win, 15-3.

Game 1 | Brewton-Parker 1, Talladega 3

Talladega struck first in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to right field for the 1-0 lead. Both teams produced a hit in the third inning, but both left runners on base to close out another scoreless inning.

The fourth inning resulted in scoreless efforts as well. Talladega was given an opportunity for a batter to reach via an error from the Lady Barons, but the Tornadoes were unable to take advantage of the miscue.

Brewton-Parker finally put a run on the scoreboard as Alexia Mays knocked out a solo shot over the left-field wall to level the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning. The Tornadoes utilized three hits and another BPC error to score two runs in the bottom of the six to reclaim the lead, 3-1.

Abbey Flowers was able to produce a hit for the Lady Barons before Josalin Whitten was hit by a pitch along with Mays reaching base via a walk. Unfortunately, all three runners were left on base, and Talladega pulled away with the 3-1 win to open the two-game series.

Inside the Statistics

  • Talladega outhit Brewton-Parker 6-3 for the opening game. Erika Yatabe, Flowers, and Mays all notched a hit apiece. In addition, Mays' solo shot was her first homer of the season.
  • Whitten produced 10 putouts with Chloe Strickland recording three assists and Olivia Whitt recording two.
  • Natalie Hardy pitched all six innings in the circle for the Lady Barons. She gave up two earned runs while walking and striking out one batter.

Game 2 | Brewton-Parker 15, Talladega 3

The Lady Barons opened game two hot with eight runs in the first inning. Alexis Bradshaw scored from an RBI single off the bat of MacKenzie Tripp. Tripp then scored from a throwing error by the Tornadoes. Madisen Nelson and BryAnn Pound scored off a two-RBI single from Cailyn Snellgrove for the 4-0 lead. Abby Cox, Whitt, Yatabe, and Bradshaw all scored for four additional runs to close out the inning with the 8-0 lead. BPC produced five hits and left a runner on base in the inning.

Brewton-Parker added an additional pair of runs in the top of the second inning with Pound and Whitt crossing the dish. Pound connected for a single while Whitt took advantage of a throwing error to reach first base.

In the top of the third inning, BPC added three more runs to advance to a commanding 13-0 lead. The Lady Barons produced four hits and benefitted from a Talladega miscue. Pound highlighted the inning with a three-run homer that brought in both Tripp and Strickland.

Talladega responded in the bottom of the inning with four hits and three runs scored to move the deficit to just 10 runs beneath BPC. The Lady Barons closed out the game with a run scored in the fourth and fifth innings to seal the 15-3 win over the Tornadoes.

Inside the Statistics

  • Brewton-Parker's bats dominated with 13 hits while Talladega produced just five. Tripp, Pound, Nelson, and Whitt led the Lady Barons with two hits each. Pound also led with four runs and three RBIs.
  • Snellgrove, Nelson, and Pound all recorded three putouts each with Strickland notching the lone assist in the game.
  • For baserunning, Bradshaw stole two bases with Pound and Whitt stealing one each.
  • Laykin Brown started for BPC, throwing three innings. She allowed all five hits and three earned runs. In addition, she struck out two batters and walked one.
  • Alexis Williams pitched for the final two innings, striking out a batter in the process.

Brewton-Parker is now 12-12 on the season and 1-5 in SSAC play. The Lady Barons return to action on Friday as they host Blue Mountain (Miss.) on Friday at 1 p.m. ET.
