Lady Barons Slip Past Paine in Tuesday Sweep Over the Lions

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The Brewton-Parker softball program hosted Paine (Ga.) on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Barons (8-6) swept the Lions (3-8) with a 3-0 win in game one and a 5-3 win in game two.

Game 1 | Brewton-Parker 3, Paine 0

Brewton-Parker struck first in the opening inning after shutting out the Lions in the top half of the first. Alexis Bradshaw crossed home plate for the solo run off a left-field single from MacKenzie Tripp. The Lady Barons recorded two hits and left one runner on.

After a quick three outs, BPC added another run in the bottom of the second inning with Olivia Whitt scoring the run. Brewton-Parker took advantage of two errors from Paine but left three runners on base.

The third and fourth innings resulted in scoreless efforts from both sides until the Lady Barons increased their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Bradshaw scored another run for BPC to make the lead 3-0. In the sixth inning, Brewton-Parker gathered two hits but left two runners on base. The Lady Barons closed out the seventh inning to win with the three-run lead.

Inside the Statistics

  • Both teams gathered five hits apiece with five individual Lady Barons picking up a hit each.
  • Both Abbey Flowers and Tripp were credited with BPCs two RBIs while Bradshaw led with two of the three runs.
  • Defensively, Josalin Whitten led with seven of the team's 21 putouts with Chloe Strickland recording six assists.
  • Natalie Hardy threw for all seven innings and struck out four batters on 27 at-bats.

Game 2 | Brewton-Parker 5, Paine 3

The Lions opened the scoring in game two with a run in the first inning. Paine was the beneficiary of a BPC error to get on base before scoring a run from a sacrifice bunt. PC scored another run in the second from one hit and another error from the Lady Barons. The Lions were in prime position with a 2-0 lead after an inning and a half.

Paine's lead was short-lived as Brewton-Parker leveled the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Cayden Fleming scored from a center-field triple from Abby Cox. Cox gathered the second run after stealing home plate.

The tie was broken in the third inning as Paine found another run to lead 3-2. However, the Lions' lead didn't last long with the Lady Barons answering with another pair of scores to lead 4-3. Savannah Cook scored while pinch-running for Flowers with Madisen Nelson also gathering a run.

Brewton-Parker added one final run in the fifth inning with Cox scoring from a single off Bradshaw's bat. With the 5-3 lead, BPC was able to close out the game by keeping the Lions away.

Inside the Statistics

  • BPC narrowly outhit PC 5-4 in game two with Cox leading the Lady Barons with two hits as well as two RBIs.
  • The duo of Bradshaw and Cox gathered two stolen bases apiece while BryAnn Pound and Strickland recorded one each.
  • Nelson gathered nine of the 21 putouts for BPC with Tripp recording three assists.
  • In the circle, Laykin Brown pitched for all seven innings and allowed just two earned runs while striking out four batters.

The Barons move to 8-6 on the season and return to play on Saturday with a road doubleheader at Trinity Baptist (Fla.).
