Women's Basketball Falls to Talladega in SSAC Tournament Semifinals, 85-72

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Brewton-Parker Women's Basketball competed in the SSAC Tournament Semifinals on Friday against No. 3-seeded Talladega (Ala.) at the Multiplex at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala.

The No. 7-seeded Lady Barons (15-11) were downed by the Tornadoes (20-10), 85-72.

"It's so difficult to beat a team three times in a row," Head Coach Steve Edwards said. "Talladega played well tonight, and they deserved to win. However, I'm proud of our fight."

"We had a good season, and our young players were able to gain some much-needed experience," Edwards added. We have two seniors, and we are thankful for their efforts this season. We look forward to getting better in the off-season and getting back to it next season."

How It Happened

Talladega opened the scoring two minutes into play to lead 2-0. After a quick back-and-forth, Brewton-Parker leveled the game with 7:11 left to play. With a jumper from Keonya Mincey, the Lady Barons took an early 6-4 lead with 6:34 remaining in the period.

The following couple of minutes resulted in both teams trading scores with the Tornadoes pulling out to a seven-point, 15-8 lead with 2:32 remaining. Both teams closed out the quarter with three points apiece to make the score 18-11 after the opening 10 minutes of action.

After Talladega opened the second quarter with a jumper, Brewton-Parker went on a 6-0 run to knock the deficit down to three points with 7:18 left in the half. The Tornadoes responded with five points to pull away to an eight-point, 25-17 lead. For the next few minutes, TC's lead fluctuated between 6-8 points.

Talladega pulled out to a 12-point lead with 2:53 left but the Lady Barons fought back to pull the deficit under double figures. The Tornadoes outscored the Lady Barons 24-23 in the period for the 42-33 lead.

In the opening five minutes of the third quarter, Talladega jumped out to an 18-point lead. BPC was able to battle but managed to close out the period with a 12-point deficit, down 64-52. The Tornadoes outscored Brewton-Parker by four points in the period, 22-18.

Brewton-Parker went on a 17-8 run over the next six and a half minutes to knock the double-digit deficit down to just three points. Talladega picked three points from an "and one" effort to lead by six with 2:20 left to play. A big three-pointer from Alexia Galloway helped the Lady Barons get back within three points but the Tornadoes closed out the game on a 10-0 run to win 85-72.

Inside The Statistics

  • Four Lady Barons gathered double-figure points with Galloway leading with 25 points.
  • Angel McRae and Micah Bess both notched 14 points apiece with McRae recording another double-double performance with 21 rebounds.
  • Lastly, Madison Evans scored 11 points to round out the double-digit scorers.
  • As a team, BPC shot for 32.5% (27-of-83) from the field, 15% (3-of-20) from three, and 71.4% (15-of-21) from the free-throw line.
