Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Women's Basketball hosted SSAC foe Mobile (Ala.) on Thursday night in Gillis Gymnasium.
The Lady Barons (13-9, 7-7 SSAC) picked up a bounce-back win over the Rams (12-8, 6-6 SSAC) with a 74-70 performance at home.
"We found a way to beat a good Mobile team tonight," Coach Steve Edwards said. "We have a ton of respect for their coaches and players. I'm proud of the way we fought late."
"We have to be better once we take control of games," Edwards added. "We will get back to work tomorrow to prepare for Saturday."
How It Happened
Brewton-Parker opened the game in a dominant fashion by starting off with a 9-0 run over three minutes played. Mobile finally answered back-to-back jumpers to knock the deficit down to five. Eventually, the Rams managed to pull the Lady Barons' lead down to just one with 2:55 left to play in the opening quarter. Brewton-Parker managed to pull away to a 10-point lead in the final minutes, leading 26-16 after 10 minutes of action.
To open the second quarter, Mobile knocked down five unanswered points to pull the deficit to five. Brewton-Parker answered with an 8-0 run to lead, 36-24 with 5:43 left in the half. The Rams were able to close out the second quarter by outscoring BPC 8-3 to keep the deficit at 10 points at the break.
The Lady Barons came out of the locker room with back-to-back scoring trips to lead by 14 but began gaining some momentum with a 13-2 run to pull BPC's lead down to just three points with four minutes left. The Rams came as close as two points in the quarter at the 2:19 mark with BPC leading 50-48, but the Lady Barons remained in control of the scoreline. In the third quarter, Mobile outscored Brewton-Parker 21-15 to make the score just 54-50.
With 10 minutes left in the game, Mobile opened the fourth quarter with six unanswered points to claim the lead by two, 56-54. Two good free throws from Madison Evans leveled the game before a jumper from Micah Bess at the 6:55 mark helped capture the lead for BPC. The Rams regained control with four points, but Brewton-Parker was quick to level with Bess scoring from the charity stripe.
The Rams answered with two free throws of their own to recapture the lead at 62-60 but an "and-one" effort from Bess gave the Lady Barons a one-point advantage with 4:45 to play. Mobile utilized a jumper and a three-pointer to pull away to a four-point lead with three and a half minutes left but Brewton-Parker did not give away further than a two-score deficit.
Mobile moved back to a four-point cushion with 2:14 to lead,70-66 but back-to-back buckets from Evans leveled the game with Bess giving BPC the lead from the free-throw line. Brewton-Parker managed to hold off Mobile for the remainder of the game, scoring two final free throws to secure the 74-70 victory.
Inside The Statistics
- Three Lady Barons scored in double figures with Bess leading the way with 20 points. Evans notched 17 points followed by Mayya Hopkins with 10.
- Off the glass, Angel McRae gathered a season-high 19 rebounds on the night with 15 on the defensive side of the floor.
- Despite McRae's efforts, Mobile narrowly held the advantage in rebounds, 46-45.
- BPC shot for 34.4% from the floor, 28.6% from three, and 76.5% from the charity stripe.
Other Notables
- Mobile took advantage of turnovers as Brewton-Parker gave up 17 while the Rams gave up 11. The Rams scored 18 points off the Lady Barons' mistakes.
- BPC's win over Mobile on Thursday night breaks a four-game losing streak to the Rams that started back on Feb. 28, 2019.
