Lady Barons Struggle in 62-46 Loss to William Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Brewton-Parker Women's Basketball program hit the road to take on SSAC foe William Carey (Miss.) on Thursday night for the SSAC Game of the Week, announced by conference officials on Wednesday.

The Lady Barons (11-7, 5-5 SSAC) struggled with shooting all night against the Crusaders (8-6, 4-4 SSAC) in the 62-46 loss in Hattiesburg.

"William Carey was better than us in just about every category tonight," Coach Steve Edwards said. "We were not good tonight."

"We are not going to make excuses," Edwards added. "We have to be better and we will."

How It Happened

Brewton-Parker opened the game with a three-pointer from Keonya Mincey to lead early. However, the Crusaders answered with a 12-0 run to lead by nine points with 6:02 remaining in the first period. The Lady Barons found a way to respond and went on a run of their own to level the game at 12-12 with three minutes left.

WCU returned the favor, reclaiming the lead with a bucket from Rebekah Engle. After a three from Cisley Copper, BPC recaptured the lead, but the Crusaders closed out the first quarter with two free throws to lead 16-15.

William Carey brought the momentum with them in the second quarter after the Brewton-Parker scored to open the second installment of the game. The Crusaders quickly jumped out to a six-point lead with an 8-0 run to lead 23-17 with just under eight minutes left in the half.

William Carey eventually advanced the score to a nine-point lead just a minute later. Brewton-Parker managed to knock the deficit down to three points with a 7-1 run, capped by a bucket from Samerria Bryant. The Crusaders sealed off the second quarter with five points to lead 33-26 at the break, outscoring the Lady Barons 17-11 in the second quarter.

Coming out of the halftime break William Carey scored to lead by nine, but Brewton-Parker pulled within four points after scoring five points in the first two minutes of action. The Crusaders bounced back with two buckets to pull back to an eight-point lead with five minutes left. WCU broke into its first double-digit lead of the night at the 2:12 mark, leading 44-34. The Crusaders closed out the quarter with 11 points and held the Lady Barons to just eight points.

In the fourth quarter, William Carey scored back-to-back jumpers to lead by 20 early. Brewton-Parker was unable to catch any momentum in the final period of play. The Lady Barons were able to pull as close as 13 points but failed to mount a comeback effort. The Crusaders were able to close out the game with the 62-46 win.

Inside The Statistics

  • Chardell Jones led the scoring efforts for Brewton-Parker with nine points with Micah Bess and Mincey both recording eight points each.
  • Off the glass, Madison Evans, Tajah'nae Wiggins, Bess, and Jones gathered five rebounds apiece.
  • The Lady Barons shot for just 25% (13-of-52) from the field, 23.5% (4-of-17) from three, and 64% (16-of-25) from the free throw line.
  • Brewton-Parker was outrebounded by the Crusaders 47-29 on the night.
