Wiggins' Double-Double Leads Lady Barons to 80-76 Win Over Middle Georgia

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Women's Basketball hosted Middle Georgia for Southern States Athletic Play on Monday night in Gillis Gymnasium.

Tajah'nae Wiggins' double-double performance led the way for the Lady Barons (11-6, 5-4 SSAC) to down the visiting Knights (7-3, 4-3 SSAC), 80-76.

"We found a way to win a tough game tonight," Head Coach Steve Edwards said. "We were shorthanded due to COVID protocols, but we didn't make excuses."

"I'm proud of my team and the way they fought down the stretch," Edwards added. "We could've rolled over after losing the lead, but we battled. We will get some rest and get back to work tomorrow."

How It Happened

Middle Georgia pulled away to a four-point lead in the first two minutes of play with a 5-1 lead. Brewton-Parker pulled the deficit back with a quick 5-0 to capture the lead. The Lady Barons followed up with another 5-0 run to lead by six with five minutes remaining. Brewton-Parker outscored Middle Georgia 18-15 in the last five minutes, closing out the first quarter with a 29-20 lead.

The Knights held the Lady Barons scoreless in the opening three minutes of the second quarter. MGA pulled BPC's lead down to three, but Brewton-Parker answered with two free throws to move the lead to five points. Within the next five minutes, the Lady Barons built up an 11-point lead by outscoring the Knights 12-6. Brewton-Parker closed out the half with three free throws to lead 46-34 at the break.

Brewton-Parker jumped out to a 16-point lead to open the third quarter. Middle Georgia picked up momentum in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Barons 13-1 to pull the deficit down to just four points with two and a half minutes left. Brewton-Parker responded to the Knights with back-to-back buckets to pull the lead back to eight points. The Knights closed out the quarter with four points and outscored the Lady Barons 19-13. However, BPC continued to hold the upper hand, leading 59-53 with the final 10 minutes to play.

Middle Georgia continued to build upon the momentum found in the third quarter by eventually reclaiming the lead with 5:26 left to play, leading 63-61. The Knights' lead was short-lived as the Lady Barons leveled the game and recaptured the lead with 4:29 remaining. MGA gathered the lead yet again with a three-pointer, but BPC netted a trey of their own to lead 68-66 with just under four minutes to play.

Both teams traded scores, forcing back-and-forth lead changes. Brewton-Parker eventually broke the trend after a jumper from Wiggins to lead 77-75 with 12 seconds left on the board. MGA was forced to foul late, allowing the Lady Barons to pull away with the 80-76 win.

Inside The Statistics

  • Wiggins led the way for Brewton-Parker by picking up 27 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Wiggins also led with three of the team's four steals.
  • Madison Evans gathered 12 points and dished out four assists as well.
  • As a team, Brewton-Parker shot for 39% (23-of-59) from the field 30% (6-of-20) from three, and 71.8% (28-of-39) from the charity stripe.
  • The Lady Barons outrebounded the Knights 44-36.

  • Both teams recorded 20 turnovers apiece.
  • Middle Georgia held the advantage in assists (12-9) and steals (11-4) while Brewton-Parker led 2-0 in blocks.
