Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Lady Barons Basketball returned to Mount Vernon, Ga. to host (RV) Talladega (Ala.) on Monday night.
The Lady Barons (9-5, 3-3 SSAC) downed the talented Tornadoes (12-5, 4-2 SSAC) with an 84-78 win in Gillis Gymnasium.
"We beat a really good team today," Head Coach Steve Edwards mentioned. "We found a way to make plays and get stops when it counted the most."
We are learning what it takes to win games late and today, we found a way to get a big win," Edwards added. "We have two more games this week so we will get back to work tomorrow to prepare."
How It Happened
The Tornadoes opened the game with a quick bucket before both teams came up empty-handed on the following trips down the floor. About a minute and a half into the opening quarter, Madison Evans leveled the game to put the Lady Barons on the board. With two free throws in the books for Micah Bess, Brewton-Parker held an early two-point lead just moments later.
Talladega answered with a jumper to level the game with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter. Once the Tornadoes broke free at 6:15 left, Talladega would not look back as they held the lead for the remainder of the quarter. TC managed to build up to a nine-point lead with two minutes to play but the Lady Barons closed out the first period with three free throws from Evans to knock the deficit to six with Talladega leading18-12.
After an opening bucket from the Tornadoes, Brewton-Parker found themselves closing in with back-to-back treys from Cisley Copper within the first minute of action. The Lady Barons flipped the script in the second period by finally reclaiming the lead with just under six minutes to play.
Brewton-Parker went on a 13-2 run that was capped off with a three-pointer from Copper, moving to a 10-point lead. Talladega managed to complete some damage control with two consecutive jumpers to close out the half. The Lady Barons headed off the court with the 36-30 lead after two quarters of play.
The opening five minutes of the third quarter included some back-and-forth action with BPC narrowly outscoring TC 11-10 to remain in control of the score with a seven-point, 47-40 lead. Talladega was still knocking on the door by pulling in to just a three-point deficit with four minutes left in the period. However, Brewton-Parker held strong by outscoring Talladega 10-7 in the final minutes to close out the quarter with the 57-51 lead.
The Tornadoes quickly knocked down Brewton-Parker's lead to two in the opening minute and a half with a 6-2 run. The Lady Barons quickly responded with five points of their own to take a 64-57 lead with seven minutes remaining in the game. Over the next four minutes, BPC slowly built up its lead to 10 points before Talladega went on to answer yet again.
TC gathered 12 points to pull BPC's lead to just two points with just under a minute remaining. Brewton-Parker utilized a few free throws and a bucket to seal the 84-78 victory over the Tornadoes.
Inside The Statistics
- Evans nearly matched her season-high tonight, scoring 23 points while shooting for 70% (7-of-10) from the field and 69.2% (9-of-13) from the charity stripe.
- Both Keonya Mincey and Angel McRae gathered double-digit points with Mincey recording 11 and McRae notching 10. In addition, McRae picked up her eighth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds for the game.
- As a team, BPC shot for 41.2 % (28-of-67) from the field, 19% (4-of-21) from three, and 75% (24-of-32) from the free-throw line.
- Off the glass, Talladega outrebounded Brewton-Parker 42-37 on the afternoon.
Other Notables
- Talladega gave up 19 turnovers with Brewton-Parker losing 13. The Lady Barons took advantage by outscoring the Tornadoes 16-10 off turnovers.
- The bench for BPC produced 26 points with TC scoring 19.
