Men's Basketball Falls Short 53-51 to (RV) Florida College

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Brewton-Parker Men's Basketball fell 53-51 to (RV) Florida College in Lakeland, Fla. on Saturday.

The Barons (1-12) dropped the neutral site matchup against the Falcons (12-1) on the campus of Southeastern (Fla.).

"We have been playing better as of late but still not good enough to close games out," Head Coach Stephen Birchfield said. "This is our second consecutive game lost by a single possession against either a ranked opponent or one who is receiving votes."

"Our guys need to continue fighting," Birchfield added. "When the wins begin, they should come in bunches. We have to continue playing together and working on dialing in the fundamentals."

How It Happened

The Barons opened the game with a score nearly two minutes into the game, but the Falcons quickly leveled the game and captured the lead which they slowly built up to double digits, leading 12-2 with 12 minutes to play.

After a three from BPC to pull within single digits, FC went on a 10-1 run to lead by 16 points before the Barons were able to score from the field. The Falcons built up to an 18-point lead with around two minutes to play before the Barons closed out the half on an 11-2 run to diminish the deficit to just nine points with FC leading 31-22 at the break.

 The second half opened with back-and-forth action as both teams traded scores in the first couple of minutes. Over the course of the next few minutes, Brewton-Parker slowly demolished the double-digit deficit with an 11-0 run to be down just three points with nine minutes to play. Florida College answered with a 7-2 run to lead by eight points with two minutes erased from the clock.

After moving the lead to 47-38, the Barons scored six consecutive points to drop the Falcons' lead to three points with three minutes remaining in the game. Brewton-Parker fought hard in the final minutes but were outscored 6-5 within the last minute to fall by just two points, 53-51.

Inside The Statistics

  • Two Barons recorded double-digit points as Floyd Davis and Nic Pullum both gathered 10 points apiece.
  • Bryce Wilson notched a game-high 13 rebounds to lead the Barons' rebounding efforts. Wilson's 13 boards assisted the Barons in outrebounding the Falcons 46-43.
  • A trio of BPC student-athletes gathered four assists each for the day.
  • As a team, BPC shot for 33.9% (21-of-62) from the field, 24% (6-of-25) from three, and 27.3% (3-of-11) from the charity stripe.

Other Notables

  • Brewton-Parker gave up 16 turnovers with Florida College giving up 13. The Falcons took advantage of the opportunities as they outscored the Barons 21-6 off turnovers.
