Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The Brewton-Parker Lady Barons basketball program continued Southern States Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon with a matchup against No. 22-ranked Loyola (La.).
The Lady Barons (5-2, 1-1 SSAC) fell short against the Wolf Pack (3-1, 2-0 SSAC) in overtime to drop the first conference game of the season.
Head Coach Steve Edwards spoke briefly after the game about the team's performance. "I am proud of our effort today," Edwards said. "We battled and had opportunities to win the game in the final seconds."
"We will learn from today and we will apply the lessons to similar situations later on in the season," Edwards added. "We didn't make enough plays in overtime to pull out the win. Loyola is a good team and is a tough opponent to beat."
How It Happened
- Brewton-Parker opened the game with a 2-0 lead before Loyola answered with a score of their own. For the following few minutes, both teams traded shots and leads. Loyola eventually broke away on a 7-0 run late in the first quarter, advancing to a six-point lead. The Lady Barons closed out the first 10 minutes of play with a free throw to move the Wolf Pack's lead to 16-11.
- In the second quarter, Loyola continued to control the scoreline for a moment until the Lady Barons equalized with back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game at 19-19 with seven minutes to play. The Wolf Pack quickly reclaimed the lead on an 8-2 run before consecutive buckets from Brewton-Parker evened the score again. BPC eventually claimed the lead with just over 30 seconds remaining, closing out the first half with a 33-30 advantage.
- The Lady Barons continued to control the momentum in their favor to open the third quarter. Brewton-Parker pulled away to a seven-point lead with under six minutes to play in the period. The Wolf Pack slowly chipped away at the deficit and tied the game before regaining control of the score. A few moments of back-and-forth between both teams produced several ties but the Lady Barons could not snag a lead. Loyola closed out the third quarter up 49-48.
- Brewton-Parker began the fourth quarter with the lead after an opening bucket, but Loyola quickly responded to regather the advantage. Both teams traded shots, but the Wolf Pack pieced together a 10-0 run to lead by nine points with just over six minutes to play. The Lady Barons connected on shots, but the Wolf Pack continued to answer. With just over two minutes to play, the Lady Barons began piecing together an 8-2 run to close out regulation time 70-70.
- 40 minutes was not enough for both teams as they headed to overtime. Brewton-Parker opened with a bucket to lead by two with Loyola quickly taking over the score with a 5-0 run to lead by three. As time went on, the Wolf Pack would not let go of the lead for the remainder of the game. Loyola had a seven-point lead late into the overtime period with Brewton-Parker managing to pull within two points. With 12 seconds remaining, the Wolf Pack picked up two free throws and put away the game 88-84.

- As a team, Brewton-Parker held the advantage over Loyola in field goal percentage, three-point percentage, and free throw percentage. The Lady Barons shot 42.3% (30-OF-71) from the field, 14.3% (3-of-21) from three, and 63.6% (21-of-33) from the charity stripe.
- Madison Evans led the team with a game-high 26 points and six assists while shooting for 71.4% from the field.
- Micah Bess gathered 19 points and five assists on the afternoon while shooting for 75% from the field.
- Loyola outrebounded Brewton-Parker 50-47 on the day. Angel McRae led the Lady Barons with nine rebounds.
