Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. – Brewton-Parker baseball continued SSAC Tournament play with a rematch against No. 5 seed Middle Georgia in an elimination game on Friday night in Columbus, Ga.
The Barons (22-29) battled for all nine innings to knock out the Knights (30-19-1) with a 10-9 thriller.
How It Happened
Brewton-Parker produced just one hit from Matt Collins to open the game but left a runner on base as Eduardo Castillo reached on a fielder's choice. Middle Georgia utilized a two-run homer on Austin Visocchi to lead 2-0 in the bottom half of the opening inning.
The Barons left a pair of runners on in the second inning as Jordan Rahn reached on an error and Jackson Smith connected for a single. BPC held the Knights back after giving up an error to keep the deficit at just two runs.
Middle Georgia's lead was extinguished as the Barons found a pair of runs in the third inning. After two walked batters, BPC scored the pair off an MGA error to level the game. The Knights reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning with just one run and one hit while taking advantage of another BPC miscue to lead 3-2.
Brewton-Parker answered with three runs in the fourth inning with four hits from the bats of Malik Germany, Mackenzie McDowell, Taz Worrell, and Collins. McDowell, Worrell, and Collins all recorded RBIs as well.
After giving up two hits and walking a batter, Visocchi's time on the mound ended in the fourth inning. He pitched for three innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits while striking out two batters and walking two. Chandler Koerner replaced Visocchi on the bump and went on to pitch for four innings. The Knights closed out the fourth inning with two runs scored to tie the ballgame at 5-5.
The fifth inning closed with scoreless efforts before the Barons connected for two hits to score the go-ahead run. Worrell led the inning off with a double before Castillo notched an RBI single to bring home Worrell.
Middle Georgia utilized four hits and one BPC error to score four runs in the seventh inning, jolting to a 9-6 lead. Brewton-Parker responded with three runs during the top frame of the eighth inning to pull back to a level score.
Brewton-Parker was able to plate four runs in the final two innings, utilizing a wild pitch, bases-loaded walk, and a sacrifice fly to bring three runs home in the eighth followed by an error in the ninth inning for the winning score.
McDowell replaced Koerner after four innings' worth of action. Koerner gave up four hits and three earned runs while striking out five batters and walking two. McDowell closed out the final two innings of play, recording three strikeouts, two walks, and two hits.
