MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Brewton-Parker Christian University (BPCU) Barons baseball team faced off against the Rams of the University of Mobile (Ala.) in the final game of pool play for the SSAC tournament. The Barons fell behind early and were unable to overcome the deficit, losing the game 10-5.
The Barons struck first in the opening inning when Jeremi Lara singled to center to bring home Fred Diaz for a 1-0 lead. Mobile erased that edge in the bottom of the first on a three-run double down the right-field line. The Rams added another run in the second to push their lead to 4-1. The Barons responded with a three-run inning at the top of the third when Diaz hit a solo homerun to trim the lead, and the Barons then capitalized on an error to score two more runs and tie the game at four. The Rams exploded for five runs at the bottom of the third to take back momentum and control of the game. At the top of the fifth, Anthony Savarese hit a sacrifice fly to score Michael Son, but the Rams would score again at the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 10-5 and seal the game.
The loss ends the Barons' season, and they will turn to the offseason, focusing on recruiting and preparations for next season.
