Baseball Picks Up Pair of Wins Over Blue Mountain

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker baseball opened its weekend series against Blue Mountain (Miss.) on Friday afternoon to continue SSAC action

The Barons (16-20, 10-4 SSAC) secured the series by winning both games in Friday's doubleheader over the Toppers (20-19, 4-10 SSAC), 3-2, and 5-1.

Game 1 | Brewton-Parker 3, Blue Mountain 2

Brewton-Parker struck first with two runs in the bottom of the third inning after producing three hits and utilizing an error from the Toppers. Taz Worrell connected for a leadoff single following up with a stolen base and advancing to third on an error. Tony Rudolph walked prior to Matt Collins notching an RBI single to left field to bring in Worrell. Collins eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Malik Germany to give BPC the 2-0 lead.

Blue Mountain equalized in the top of the sixth inning with a pair of runs of their own. The Toppers connected for two hits and left a runner on base to close out the inning. The scheduled seven-inning game was forced to extra innings as the seventh inning resulted in a scoreless affair.

The Toppers managed to get two runners on base with a walk and a base hit but could not break the 2-2 draw. Brewton-Parker then took advantage of a leadoff walk and a double from Eduardo Castillo to move two runners in scoring position. After two strikeouts, the Barons managed to score a walk-off run off a passed ball from the Toppers' catcher.

Jackson Smith was struck out swinging, but the catcher gave up a passed ball on the third strike which Smith managed to reach base and bring home Zachary Wilson for the game-winning run.

Inside the Statistics

  • The Toppers totaled seven hits while the Barons recorded six.
  • Both Collins and Castillo led with a pair of hits each while Collins and Germany tallied an RBI apiece.
  • Smith led with nine putouts while Rudolph assisted three.
  • Ty Cook started on the mound, pitching for six innings. He allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out six batters in the process.
  • Matt Hager pitched for the final two innings, allowing one hit while striking out two batters and walking a pair.

Game 2 | Brewton-Parker 5, Blue Mountain 1

Ethan Frasca opened the scoring for Brewton-Parker by knocking out a two-run homer to give BPC an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Both teams struggled to produce a hit in both the third and fourth innings.

In the fifth inning, the Toppers left a runner on base after connecting for a single, but the Barons produced two hits and scored two runs to move to a 4-0 lead. Jacob Mantooth led with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Mantooth was then brought home alongside Mackenzie McDowell as Worrell produced a two-RBI triple.

Wilson added one more run to the Barons' tally, scoring on a wild pitch to lead 5-0. Blue Mountain was able to add one run in the seventh after connecting for a single and utilizing a miscue from BPC. The Toppers were in a position to score additional runs, leaving three runners on base to close out the game, 5-1. Game two was moved to a seven-inning matchup due to the extended first game.

Inside the Statistics

  • BPC tallied four hits while BMC totaled three with Mantooth leading the Barons with two hits.
  • Worrell and Frasca led Brewton-Parker with two RBIs each.
  • Defensively, Wilson recorded seven putouts while Mantooth assisted three.
  • Austin Visocchi pitched all seven innings for BPC, allowing three hits and just one run. In addition, he struck out three batters and walked two.
