Smith's Hot Bat Secures Series Win Over Mobile

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker baseball closed out the weekend series against Mobile (Ala.) on Saturday with a single nine-inning game on the slate.

The Barons (14-20, 8-4 SSAC) defeated the Rams (17-14, 6-9 SSAC) with a 9-3 win to secure the series.

How It Happened

The game opened with a scoreless first and second innings as Tony Rudolph notched the lone hit between both teams in the bottom of the first inning. Mobile broke the scoreless draw with a lead-off homer in the top of the third inning. The Rams produced two hits in the inning.

Brewton-Parker found a pair of base hits from Taz Worrell and Rudolph, but the duo was left on base in the bottom half of the third inning. The Barons took control of the score with three runs and three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Eduardo Castillo knocked a double to center field while Malik Germany followed with an RBI double to score Caleb Gepfer who pinch ran for Castillo. Jackson Smith then hit his third home run of the weekend to score Germany, giving BPC the 3-1 lead.

The Barons added six more runs to the tally for a 9-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. BPC produced a total of four hits highlighted by Smith's two-out grand slam -- his fourth homer of the series. Both Matt Collins and Castillo recorded singles with Castillo earning an RBI.

The following three innings flew by with the Barons recording just two hits across the board. Worrell connected for a single in the sixth inning while Mackenzie McDowell notched a single in the bottom of the eighth.

Mobile did not go down without a fight as the Rams knocked out back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning to make the score 9-3. The Barons were able to shut the door on the Rams, securing the series win.

Inside the Statistics

  • BPC outhit UM 12-7 on the day with Smith leading the charge with two homers and six RBIs for the game. Worrell, Rudolph, and Castillo also produced a pair of hits each.
  • Gepfer and Smith led the Barons with two runs scored apiece.
  • Defensively, Zachary Wilson notched 11 putouts followed by Castillo's seven.
  • Both Germany and Rudolph produced five assists each.
  • Chandler Koerner pitched a complete game for the Barons. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs while striking out seven batters in the process.
