Mantooth's Walk-Off Highlights Late Six-Run Surge in 12-10 Win Over Thomas

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker hosted a midweek non-conference contest against Thomas (Ga.) on Tuesday afternoon.

The Barons (17-24, 10-8 SSAC) utilized a late ninth-inning surge to topple the Night Hawks (18-26) in dramatic fashion with a three-run walk-off home run.

How It Happened

Brewton-Parker took an early 1-0 lead in the opening inning with Tony Rudolph connecting for an RBI single to score Taz Worrell. Thomas immediately answered in the second inning with three hits and a run to level the game.

The Night Hawks took control of the score with a solo score in the third inning. TU produced two hits and took advantage of a BPC error to help score the run. The Barons responded with an equalizer in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double from Eduardo Castillo that brought Worrell home.

Thomas jumped out to a 6-2 lead during the top half of the fourth inning. The Night Hawks connected for four hits and received a free base off another miscue from the Barons. TU also left the bases loaded as the top side of the inning was eventually closed before adding another in the fifth inning to lead by five runs.

Brewton-Parker managed to score two runs as Worrell produced a single and Rudolph notched a double. Worrell scored from a ground out while Zachary Wilson recorded an RBI from a sacrifice fly out to score Rudolph.

During the bottom of the sixth inning, BPC added two more runs to move the deficit to just one run away. Malik Germany recorded a leadoff single and scored as Jacob Mantooth reached on an error. After stealing second base and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Mantooth scored as Mackenzie McDowell stole second.

After a scoreless seventh inning, Thomas pulled away to a 10-6 lead in the eighth inning. The Night Hawks scored three runs while producing two hits and advancing a base off an error from the Barons.

With just three outs left to play, BPC managed to score six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game 12-10. Rudolph led off with a single followed by Castillo reaching on a fielder's choice. With one out, Wilson was walked before Caleb Gepfer was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Germany was hit by a pitch to score the pinch-runner, Jered Marrs for the first of six runs which loaded the bases yet again. Jackson Smith then knocked down a two-RBI single to left field to score Wilson and Gepfer. Once Smith reached first, Chase Howze came in to pinch run just before Mantooth blasted a three-run walk-off homer to secure the 12-10 win.

Inside the Statistics

  • Thomas outhit Brewton-Parker 12-9 for the day.
  • Rudolph led the Barons with three hits followed by Germany with two.
  • Mantooth produced a game-high four RBIs followed by Castillo and Smith with a pair apiece.
  • As for the baserunning, Worrell score three runs and stole three bases.
  • Defensively, Wilson and Castillo led with five putouts each followed by Mantooth and Worrell with four apiece.
  • Six Barons appeared on the mound with Trey Jones and Austin Visocchi pitching the most. Jones pitched for 3.0 innings while Visocchi pitched 2.2 innings.
  • For Jones, he allowed eight hits and gave up three earned runs out of five while recording one strikeout.
  • Visocchi recorded one strikeout and one walk.
  • Ty Cook closed out the game and picked up the win, pitching for the final inning of action.
  • Roberto Urena led the pitching staff with two strikeouts on 0.2 innings of work.

Brewton-Parker will head to Montgomery, Ala. for a weekend series at Faulkner (Ala.).
