Baseball Wins Weekend Series at Talladega with Saturday Split

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker baseball wrapped up its weekend at Talladega (Ala.) with a pair of games on Saturday afternoon.

The Barons (12-19, 6-3 SSAC) split with the Tornadoes (14-13, 5-4 SSAC) dropping game one, 4-3 before winning game two 13-4.

Game 1 | Brewton-Parker 3, Talladega 4

Taz Worrell led off the first inning with a single to right field before getting caught attempting to steal second base; his first out of the season while attempting to steal a base. Worrell's single was the lone hit of the inning between both teams.

In the second, Zachary Wilson produced a leadoff single to left field but was left on base as the Barons grounded out into a double play and struck out. Talladega first reached base via an error from BPC. That same base runner stole second and proceeded to advance to third base on another error but the runner was put out at home. The Tornadoes then connected on a single but left the runner on base to continue the scoreless affair.

Neither team produced a hit in the third inning, but Talladega managed to put two runners on base with a pair of walks. However, the Tornadoes left both runners on base, closing out a third scoreless inning.

The Barons broke through in the fourth inning with three runs. Tony Rudolph notched a leadoff double prior to Matt Collins knocking out a two-run homer over the fence in right-center field. Eduardo Castillo and Wilson both produced a single hit each, but the Barons left two runners on base to close the top half of the inning out with the 3-0 lead.

Talladega responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with a pair of runs, taking advantage of an error from BPC. The Tornadoes produced just one hit in the inning. Brewton-Parker was held hitless in the final three innings of the scheduled seven-inning game with Talladega scoring a run in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the 4-3 win over BPC.

Inside the Statistics

  • The Barons narrowly held the advantage over the Tornadoes, outhitting TC 6-4 for the first game of the day.
  • Wilson led BPC with two hits while Collins led with a pair of RBIs.
  • For fielding, Jackson Smith recorded eight putouts while Malik Germany and Ty Cook recorded two assists each.
  • On the mound, Cook pitched for the entire game. He allowed five hits and two earned runs. He struck out seven batters and walked five.

Game 2 | Brewton-Parker 13, Talladega 4

After notching two hits in the top of the first inning, BPC was left scoreless. Talladega struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the opening inning. The Tornadoes utilized two doubles and a single to lead 2-0.

Brewton-Parker quickly leveled the game with a two-run response in the second inning. Castillo reached base on a walk just before Germany knocked out a two-run homer to level the score at 2-2. Talladega answered with a run of its own.

The Tornadoes led off with a double before taking advantage of a BPC miscue to score. TC notched a single and was awarded another error from the Barons, but the one run was all the damage that was produced.

BPC produced a pair of hits to assist in scoring two runs to reclaim the lead, 4-3. Worrell singled to lead off the inning and was brought home from an RBI single off Wilson's bat. After being walked, Rudolph scored from a groundout to give the Barons two runs.

Brewton-Parker added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning with Worrell continuing to produce from the batter's box. Worrell notched a two-RBI double to center field, bringing home Mackenzie McDowell and Germany. Rudolph followed with an RBI single to score Worrell for the 7-3 lead.

The fifth inning resulted in scoreless efforts for both sides. Talladega added one final run on the afternoon in the sixth inning. The Tornadoes produced two hits in the process.

Talladega gave up two errors to help the Barons in the top of the seventh. BPC notched just one hit but benefitted from the TC mishaps, taking a 9-4 lead. Mauri Miller came in to pinch run and scored alongside Collins from an error.

Brewton-Parker tallied four more runs in the eighth inning from four hits and another Talladega error to lead, 13-4. The Barons produced two doubles and a pair of singles. Collins notched a two-RBI double with McDowell notched an RBI single. The Barons held on to the nine-run lead, closing out the game for the series win.

  • Both teams recorded 14 hits each with the Barons producing 10 RBIs.
  • Worrell led with three hits while five others tallied two hits each.
  • Germany scored three runs while Rudolph and Worrell both scored two.
  • As a team, BPC produced three doubles.
  • Three Barons notched two RBIs apiece.
  • Castillo recorded eight putouts while two others notched five each.
  • Two pitchers appeared on the mound for Brewton-Parker. Chandler Koerner picked up the win, throwing for six innings. He allowed 10 hits and four earned runs. He struck out five batters as well.
  • McDowell closed out the game, pitching for three innings. He gave up four hits and struck out four batters.
