Baseball Drops Home Opener to USC-Beaufort, 12-6

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – After a shift in the schedule with inclement weather forecasted to roll in on Friday, the Brewton-Parker baseball program hosted South Carolina Beaufort on Thursday night for the first home game of the 2022 season.

The Barons (1-2) fell to the Sand Sharks (2-4) 12-6 in a single nine-inning game in Mount Vernon.

How It Happened

Brewton-Parker opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning to lead 1-0 over USC-Beaufort. Drew DeMasi crossed home to give the Barons the one-run lead with Taz Worrell being credited with the RBI.

After a scoreless third inning, USCB utilized three runs to capture the lead which forced the Barons to make a pitching change -- the first of several on the night. BPC answered with a lone run in the bottom half of the inning Malik Germany knocked in Tony Rudolph for the score.

The Sand Sharks gathered five more runs in the top of the fifth inning to move the lead to 8-2. USCB recorded five hits and left one on base in the inning. The Barons were unable to produce anything offensively in the bottom half of the fifth inning prior to both teams going scoreless in the sixth.

In the seventh, the Sand Sharks added one run to move to a 9-2 lead over the Barons. In the bottom half of the inning, BPC recorded two hits but was closed out by USCB with a triple play. The eighth inning ended up being the most action-packed for both teams with a combined seven runs were scored.

USCB scored three runs to advance its lead to 12-2. Brewton-Parker did not go down without a fight in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four runs. The Barons picked up the runs on four hits but left two on base. Germany was credited with two RBIs while Jordan Rahn and Zach Wilson gathered an RBI each. Caleb Gepfer, Mauri Miller, Taz Worrell, and Wilson all crossed home plate for the Barons.

In the ninth, both teams were held scoreless, and the Barons' chances of a late-game comeback were squandered.

Inside the Statistics

  • The Barons gathered nine hits on the evening with Germany leading the way, garnering three followed by Rahn and Wilson with two.
  • Germany also knocked in a leading three RBIs with Worrell, Rahn, and Wilson picking up one apiece.
  • Ben Harris started the night on the mound, pitching for 3.2 innings. On 18 at-bats, Harris gave up six hits and three runs while striking out eight batters in the process.
  • Dakota Davis threw for 0.1 innings and gave up a pair of hits as well as a pair of runs before Austin Visocchi pitched for three innings.
  • Visocchi recorded one strikeout on 13 at-bats, giving up four hits and four runs.
  • Jered Marrs and PJ Ridgeway closed out the night for BPC for 1.3 innings combined.
  • Marrs gave up three runs on three hits as well as struck out two before Ridgeway closed the game with a strikeout.

The Barons move to 1-2 on the season and will take on the Sand Sharks tomorrow in Hardeeville, S.C. to close out the three-game series.
