MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Brewton-Parker Christian University (BPCU) Barons baseball team hosted the #2 Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies on March 24, 2026, and stunned them, taking the game 12-8 to give the #2 team in the nation just their third loss of the season.
The Barons controlled the game early, jumping on top in the first inning when Jack Morris singled in a run to open the scoring. The Barons added two more in the second, with Zach Carlton reaching on a fielder's choice that brought home a run before a wild pitch allowed another to score, producing a 3-0 advantage. Georgia Gwinnett answered with single runs in the second, third, and fourth, including a sacrifice fly to tie the game at three.
The Barons responded immediately in the fifth, putting together a three-run inning keyed by another run-producing sequence from Carlton and sustained pressure throughout the frame to move back in front 7-3. The Grizzlies refused to go away, however. In the sixth, Dalton Miller came off the bench and launched a three-run pinch-hit homer to left, trimming the Barons' lead to 7-6.
Clinging to a 7-6 lead in the sixth, the Barons exploded in the bottom of the seventh. Marquette Gibson started the outburst with a solo home run, and later in the frame, Michael Son delivered the biggest swing of the game with a four-run blast that gave the Barons a 12-6 lead. The cushion proved enough as the Barons held off a late Grizzlies push in the ninth.
The Barons will turn their focus to a conference series against the #18 Wolf Pack of Loyola University (La.), starting with a doubleheader on March 27, 2026. The Barons will look to carry the momentum from beating one of the best teams in the country into their next series against the #18 Wolf Pack.
