MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Brewton-Parker Christian University (BPCU) Barons baseball team hosted the #18 Wolf Pack of Loyola University (La.) on March 27, 2026, in a doubleheader. The Barons fought valiantly in both games, coming up short in game one 6-4 and 12-9 in game two.
In game one, Loyola struck first in the top of the first inning when Jed Cambre singled and later came home on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead. The visitors added to that advantage in the third on Jaxon Buratt's solo home run, pushing the margin to 2-0 before the Barons answered with their best stretch of the day.
Brewton-Parker sent four runs across in the bottom of the third to grab a 4-2 lead. Caleb Strott delivered an RBI double during the rally, and Jack Morris provided the biggest swing of the inning with a two-run single. The Barons finished with eight hits, compared with six for Loyola, and made the most of that inning to briefly take control.
The Wolf Pack would respond in the fourth when Cambre came through again, this time with a two-run single that tied the score at 4-4. In the fifth, Reed Duthu scored on a wild pitch to put Loyola back ahead 5-4. Brewton-Parker was unable to answer over the final three innings.
Game two saw Loyola set the tone early and never let up the pressure. Cambre scored the game's first run in the opening inning on Duthu's sacrifice groundout, then John Lewis extended the lead to 3-0 with a two-run home run in the fourth. Brewton-Parker answered in the bottom half of that inning with two runs to get back into the game, but Duthu's RBI double in the fifth gave Loyola a 4-2 cushion.
Loyola sent five runs across the plate in the top half of the fifth inning, using a bases-loaded walk, run-scoring hits, and a sacrifice fly from JJ Garcia to build a 9-2 lead. Brewton-Parker responded immediately. Michael Son delivered a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth as part of a three-run inning, trimming the margin to 9-5. The Barons added another run in the seventh with Raul Morales and Jeremi Lara helping keep the pressure on.
Jovan Swasey homered in the eighth to push Loyola's lead to 10-6. The Barons responded, scoring three times in the bottom of the eighth, with Fred Diaz contributing a double and Morris adding a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to a single run before the ninth. The Wolf Pack would score two runs on a suicide squeeze attempt to push the lead back to three and out of reach for the Barons' comeback, shutting the Barons down in the bottom of the ninth.
The Barons will look to bounce back on March 28, 2026, when they play the final game of the series against the Wolf Pack, needing all the wins they can get as they prepare for their postseason push with more conference opponents on the schedule.
