Baseball Falls to Rio Grande During Saturday Doubleheader

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Baseball closed out its four-game weekend series with Rio Grande (Ohio) on Saturday

The Barons (3-9) wrapped up the weekend series with a pair of losses to the Red Storm (7-8), falling 4-3 and 15-3.

Game 1 – Brewton-Parker 3, Rio Grande 4

Rio Grande opened with a run in the first inning on a solo hit to lead early. Brewton-Parker produced a hit as well but even after a pair of walks, the Barons left three on base and were held from scoring.

The Red Storm recorded three hits and scored another run in the top of the second to lead 2-0. BPC was able to answer in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own off two hits. Ethan Frasca was able to come home after an initial single to open the batting order, stealing second, and running home off a left-field single from Taz Worrell.

Both teams were dealt with quickly in the third, producing scoreless efforts. The Red Storm found an additional two runs in the top of the fourth to lead 4-1 over the Barons. The Barons were held scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings until a solo score from Malik Germany crossed the dish.

Brewton-Parker was building a comeback effort in the bottom of the seventh inning after holding Rio Grande scoreless for the last three innings. BPC recorded two hits but could only produce a run, leaving a runner on base. Worrell scored to move the score to 4-3, but it wasn't enough.

Inside the Statistics

  • Brewton-Parker's batting produced nine hits while Rio Grande's produced eight.
  • The duo of Tony Rudolph and Worrell recorded two hits apiece.
  • Zach Wilson, Matt Collins, and Worrell all gathered an RBI in game one.
  • BPC left eight runners on base.
  • Trey Jones started on the mound, throwing for 3.1 innings. He allowed six hits and all four runs. He also struck out five and walked one on 15 at-bats.
  • Mackenzie McDowell pitched for 3.2 innings, giving up two hits and striking out three batters.

Game 2 – Brewton-Parker 3, Rio Grande 15

Rio Grande took advantage of some of the misfortunes of the Barons in game two. The Red Storm gathered three runs in the first and third innings while BPC scored two in the bottom of the third for a 6-2 score.

The Barons scored one final run in the bottom of the fifth before the Red Storm gathered a solo score in the seventh and eight runs in the top of the eighth to win, 15-3.
