Barons Open Weekend Series with Pair of Wins Over Rio Grande

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Baseball opened its four-game weekend series with Rio Grande (Ohio) on Friday.

The Barons (3-7) opened the series with a pair of wins over the Red Storm (5-8), winning 11-2 in game one and 2-0 in game two.

Game 1 – Brewton-Parker 11, Rio Grande 2

The Barons opened the game with two runs from Taz Worrell and Jordan Rahn for an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Matt Collins, Drew DeMasi, and Worrell all gathered singles in the bottom half-inning.

Both teams were held scoreless for the following three innings. Brewton-Parker managed to get the bats hot in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Barons gathered nine runs on five hits. Rahn highlighted the inning and the game with his grand slam to close out the inning's action.

Rio Grande finally managed to get on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning with two runs. The Red Storm was unable to produce a comeback as the game ended with the scheduled seven innings. Brewton-Parker held on to the 11-2 lead to seal the win.

Inside the Statistics

  • Rahn led the offensive efforts with three runs and four RBIs on two hits. Worrell led the batting with three hits while producing two runs. Tony Rudolph also produced a pair of runs.
  • Both DeMasi and Jackson Smith recorded a pair of RBIs each.
  • Rahn knocked out the game's lone homer while Collins gathered a double and Worrell gathered a triple.
  • Brewton-Parker recorded five stolen bases in game one.
  • Ty Cook started the game, throwing for six innings. He gave up three hits and struck out 10 batters on 20 at-bats.
  • Brock Harrison and Jacob Mantooth appeared on the mound for BPC, closing out the last 0.3 innings for the Barons. Mantooth gathered two strikeouts while Harrison recorded one.

Game 2 – Brewton-Parker 2, Keiser 0

It took until the bottom of the third for the Barons to find a hit and eventually a run. Zach Wilson scored after reaching base with a single to the left side. The Barons closed out the inning with a 1-0 lead over the Red Storm.

Brewton-Parker found another run as well as two hits during the bottom of the fourth inning. Rudolph crossed home to give the Barons a 2-0 lead with five innings to play. Both teams closed out the final four and a half innings with scoreless efforts. The Barons were held to just one hit in the final four innings of play.

Inside the Statistics

  • As a team, BPC notched just four hits during game two. DeMasi and Smith were credited with RBIs while Rudolph and Wilson scored runs.
  • Austin Visocchi threw for eight innings and gave up all of Rio Grande's eight hits. He struck out eight batters on 29 at-bats before Chandler Koerner game in for the save, throwing for the final inning. Koerner gathered two strikeouts on three at-bats.

The Barons close out the four-game stand tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. ET.
