Barons Compete at SSAC Championships

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Brewton-Parker Barons displayed a commendable performance at the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championships in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on April 24-26, 2025. In a fierce competition with schools like Life, William Carey, Dalton State, and Loyola-New Orleans, the men's team finished 4th out of 8, while the women's team took 6th place out of 9.

Highlighting the event, the men's 4x100 relay team not only qualified for nationals but also set a new school record with an impressive time of 40.91 seconds, thanks to the swift efforts of Donta Williams, TySheem Denton, Hollis Morton, and Travis Massey. In individual accolades, TySheem Denton broke the 200m school record with a time of 21.39 seconds. On the women's side, Kendra Payne shattered the 400m outdoor school record by clocking in at 57.67 seconds. The women's 4x100 relay team, consisting of Kameron Noble, Kendra Payne, Danaysia Roberts, and Sidni Daniel, set a new school record with a time of 48.45 seconds and took third place in the conference meet.

In field events, Hollis Morton captured the SSAC Champion title in high jump, reaching a remarkable 2.00 meters. At the same time, Jonah McNealey qualified for nationals in the triple jump, securing third place with a leap of 14.70 meters and reaching the podium in 3rd place. Yabaka Moore earned second place in the hammer and fourth in the shotput, contributing significant points for the team. Both Talon Walker and Shonda Khalil secured third place in the javelin, rounding off a series of strong performances across the board. In the distance running, Brandon Williams set a PR in the 10k and Eric Smith set a PR in the steeplechase. Cayden Restrepo finished third in the pole vault competition.

The next challenge for the Barons before the National meet is the Last Chance meet at the University of North Florida, scheduled for May 2, 2025, in Jacksonville, Florida, where they hope to continue their success and qualify more athletes for Nationals.
