Barons Fly Past Skyhawks in 79-50 Road Victory

WEST POINT, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Men's Basketball program traveled to West Point, Ga. to take on Point (Ga.) for a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup.

The Barons (6-10, 2-6 SSAC) downed the Skyhawks (6-10, 0-8 SSAC) convincingly with a 79-50 road victory.

How It Happened | First Half

The Barons busted the doors open with an 11-0 run in the first six minutes led by Lance Smith with eight points, capping the run off with a shot from deep at the 14:13 mark. Point responded with a run of their own, scoring 10 unanswered over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to just one.

A trey from Zailan Blue moved BPC into a four-point lead with 11:10 on the clock, but the Skyhawks leveled the game less than 60 seconds later for a 14-14 score. Brewton-Parker shifted back into a double-figured lead over the following three minutes with nine points coming from beyond the arc to lead 25-14.

After moving to a 14-point deficit with 4:10 to play, Point fought its way back into a single-digit deficit with a 10-5 stretch in the final moments, but the Barons capped the half with a trey from Smith for a 35-26 lead at the break.

How It Happened | Second Half

Brewton-Parker advanced back into a double-digit lead with a pair of free throws from Damarcus Johnson Jr. at the 18:50 mark. Point led an 8-4 stretch of scoring over the next three minutes to keep the BPC advantage to just seven, down 41-34.

The Barons returned the favor with an 8-2 run led by Smith with six points for a 13-point lead with 14:29 left in the game. A pair of layups from the Skyhawks cut the lead back to nine points with 13:20 to play before Brewton-Parker would separate from the hosts for good.

Johnson Jr. led the following couple of minutes with four of BPC's 10-0 run to comfortably cushion the lead to 59-40 with 11:01 remaining. The Barons continued to be dominant over the Skyhawks, taking the next 11 minutes to outscore the hosts 20-10 with Jordan Johnson leading with five points followed by Dre Burroughs and Smith with four each.

BPC took advantage of fouls from Point down the stretch, shooting 9-of-10 from the foul line and scoring just five buckets from the field in the final 11 minutes. The Barons outscored the Skyhawks 44-24 in the second half to secure a 79-50 win on the road.

Inside The Statistics

  • BPC shot 41% (25-of-61) from the field, 45.5% (10-of-22) from three, and 79.2% (19-of-24) from the foul line.
  • Smith scored a season-high 34 points while snagging a team-leading seven rebounds and dishing out four assists as well, followed by Burroughs with 13 points.
  • Boston also grabbed seven rebounds while scoring eight points alongside Johnson Jr.
  • The Barons' defense totaled 10 steals off 15 turnovers from the Skyhawks with Ferlin Joseph Jr. leading with three.
