Men’s Basketball Comes Up Short Against Talladega

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker men's basketball returned home to Gillis Gym on Tuesday night for an SSAC contest against Talladega (Ala.).

The Barons (5-18, 3-12 SSAC) came up short of the Tornadoes (9-14, 3-12 SSAC) in a 56-47 loss at home.

How It Happened | 1st Half

  • Lance Smith opened things up with a jumper in the paint just 60 seconds into the contest before Talladega would go on a five-minute, 14-0 run.
  • Aaron Udell ended the visitors' run at the 13:17 mark with a trey ball to pull the Barons' deficit down to under double figures.
  • Both teams traded a pair of points here and there before Udell knocked back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to cut the BPC deficit down to seven points with 9:50 to play in the half.
  • The Tornadoes quickly responded with two-straight jumpers to move back to a double-digit lead.
  • Brewton-Parker wrapped up the final eight minutes of play by outscoring Talladega 15-7 with threes from Jordan Johnson and Emmanuel Green to close out the half with a 31-28 scoreline in favor of the visitors.

How It Happened | 2nd Half

  • Talladega jumped out to a nine-point advantage in the first two and a half minutes, scoring six unanswered points.
  • After a layup from Grant Sanders, the Tornadoes produced a 7-3 run to lead 44-33 with 11:24 to play.
  • The following three-minute stretch was consumed of all free throws until Zailan Blue connected on a layup to pull cut the BPC deficit down to eight points with six minutes remaining.
  • Minutes later, an and-one dunk from Sanders nearly sparked some life into the Barons yet the Tornadoes blew away any steam that was building up with a trey at the 3:55 mark to lead 50-42.
  • Unfortunately for BPC, the Barons struggled to pull within six points in the final moments of the game with Talladega edging out the hosts 6-5 in the last 90 seconds of play to secure the nine-point win.

Inside The Statistics

  • BPC shot for 35.7% (15-of-42) from the floor, 27.3% (6-of-22) from three, and 84.6% (11-of-13) from the charity stripe.
  • Udell led with 14 points followed by Lance Smith with 10 points. Sanders and Emmanuel Green were just behind with seven points each.
  • Sanders had a great night defensively with three blocks and three steals while leading with four rebounds.

Other Notables

  • Talladega held a tight 23-21 edge in rebounding.
  • Both teams gave up 11 turnovers each with BPC scoring 10 points off turnovers while snagging seven steals.
