(RV) Running Eagles Too Much for Barons on Saturday Afternoon

MARIETTA, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Men's Basketball continued Southern States Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a matchup at (RV) Life (Ga.) in Marietta, Ga.

The Barons (4-9, 0-5 SSAC) dropped the contest against the Running Eagles (10-1, 4-0 SSAC) in a 100-87 defeat on the road.

How It Happened | First Half

After an early foul from Brewton-Parker and a free throw from Life, the Barons opened with an 8-0 run over three minutes led by four points from Lance Smith for an 8-1 lead. The Running Eagles hit a three in response but a layup from Damarcus Johnson Jr. and a pair of foul shots from Zsolt Boros placed the Barons into an eight-point advantage with 16:01 on the clock.

With some back-and-forth play in the books, Life began chipping away at the deficit and eventually leveled the score at 18-all with 10:54 remaining. A big bucket from beyond the arc out of the hands of Zailan Blue gave BPC the edge, but three unanswered three-pointers from Life boosted the Running Eagles to a 27-21 advantage with 8:40 to play.

Brewton-Parker responded well with a 10-point swing to reclaim the lead as Dre Burroughs and Grant Sanders both produced five points each. Life answered the Brewton-Parker run with one of their own, scoring 12-straight for an eight-point lead with 3:27 left before the break.

The hosts were able to hold off the Barons down the stretch despite BPC closing the half 10-8 in the final moments. Life sealed the first half with a 47-41 lead.

How It Happened | Second Half

Brewton-Parker scored six points in the first three minutes to pull the deficit down to just three points with Johnson Jr. gathering four. After a three at the 17:11 mark, the Running Eagles managed to score another nearly two minutes later for a 55-47 advantage.

The Barons built an 11-3 run to level the game at 58-58 with 12:42 remaining in the contest and managed to hold the Running Eagles to no more than a two-possession lead for the next few minutes. The game sped up over the next nine and a half minutes as both teams nearly went score-for-score with Life outscoring BPC 31-26.

Over those nine minutes, Smith produced 11 points followed by five from Jordan Johnson as BPC managed to go 8-of-14 from the field and 9-of-12 from the foul line. At the 3:08 mark, Smith netted a layup to cut the deficit to five, but that would be the closest BPC could get.

The Running Eagles finished the final three minutes of play with an 11-3 run to secure a 100-87 victory over the Barons.
