CORBIN, KY. – Brewton-Parker College Men's Wrestling competed in the Pepsi Patriot Open hosted by Cumberlands (Ky.) on Saturday to open the 2023-24 season.
The Barons brought 19 total wrestlers to compete in open tournament action for the weekend. A total of 15 BPC wrestlers were in the freshman/sophomore divisions while the other four wrestled in the open divisions.
Saturday was highlighted by a pair of podium finishes as
Charlie Henkel led with a 2nd-place finish in the open 184-pound division while
Wilkinson Saul earned a 3rd-place finish in the open 285-pound division. Henkel won his first match by a tech fall (17-1) and was teched in the finals (15-0) to go 2-1 on the day. Saul went 6-1 on the day, winning three matches by decision (13-8, 8-3, 4-1), two by major decision (16-2, 12-4), and one forfeit.
For the rest of the open division,
Sean Houston went 4-2 in the open 165-pound division, winning two matches by fall (6:55 and 0:36), a major decision (12-3), and a 16-0 tech fall.
Keyshaun Taylor competed in the open 133-pound division but was not able to produce a win in two matches.
The Freshman/Sophomore divisions were highlighted by a 5th place finish for
Gavin Daniels in the 149-pound division and a 6th place finish for
Tevin Person. Daniels won his first two matches by fall (1:07) and tech fall (17-2), before dropping the next two matches and taking 5th due to a forfeit to finish 3-2. Person won his first two matches by a decision (8-4) and a forfeit before falling in the next three matches to finish 2-3.
Patrick Jones went 4-2 today in the 125 division, winning two matches by fall (2:35 and 4:19), an 11-3 Major, and a 15-12 win in sudden victory.
Conner Wright was able to secure himself a win by decision (20-16) in the 141-pound division, while
Robert Keyhea took a forfeit win in the 157-pound division.
Jesus Grijalva produced an 8-3 decision win in the 174-pound weight class while
Levi Shaw secured a 2-2 record in the 285-pound division, winning both of his matches by fall (3:48 and 4:48).
As for the rest of BPC,

Tate Morris,
David Washington,
Bryan Pagola,
Malankov Daceus,
Walker Anthony, and
Coen Heinrich competed in the freshman/sophomore divisions but could not produce points.
