MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Brewton-Parker Men's Basketball played on the road at (RV) Faulkner (Ala.) on Tuesday night.
The Barons (4-8, 0-4 SSAC) were dropped by the Eagles (5-4, 1-2 SSAC) in an 87-79 loss in Tine Davis Gymnasium in Montgomery, Ala.
How It Happened | First Half
The half kicked off with a Faulkner jumper, followed up with a layup from
Lance Smith to get back to even two minutes into the game. Over the next four minutes, the Barons came out of a back-and-forth battle with a 15-14 lead with 15:04 on the clock, scoring nine from deep.
Jordan Johnson and Smith led the stretch with five points each, followed by
Zsolt Boros with three.
After three minutes of defensive play from both teams, the Eagles broke the silence with a layup to take a one-point lead with 12:01 left in the half. A pair of free throws from Johnson gave the Barons a 17-16 lead.
The Barons held strong in a 9-8 stretch over the next four minutes, led by four points from
Damarcus Johnson Jr., three from Smith, and two from
Chris Spenkuch, to maintain their one-point lead with 8:06 left in the half.
The Eagles found the basket with two layups to take a 31-29 lead with 5:55 left to play. Both teams were locked in another tight back-and-forth battle for the last five minutes of the half that ended in a 13-12 stretch led by seven from Smith. The Barons ended the half trailing 43-42.
How It Happened | Second Half
Brewton-Parker struck quickly with a trey from
Dre Burroughs in the early seconds of the half, to spark a 7-0 run from the Barons to gain a 49-43 lead with 18:30 left in the half. A big dunk from
Grant Sanders, sparked a 9-5 stretch lead by Burroughs with five points to extend the lead to 10 with 15:42 left on the clock.
Faulkner cut the BPC lead to seven, but the Barons responded with a layup from Sanders to extend the lead back to nine with 14:57 left in the game. The teams struggled to score for the next three minutes, but the Eagles broke the scoreless streak with a pair of free throws with 11:07 left on the clock.
Over the next four minutes, Faulkner led a 9-8 stretch to cut Brewton-Parker to a 68-64 lead with 7:28 left in the game. Another 5-2 stretch in favor of the Eagles, cut the Barons' lead to one with 5:11 on the clock.
Faulkner found some momentum with an 8-2 run to take a 77-72 lead over BPC with 2:27 left in the game. Burroughs responded with a trey to cut the deficit to two.
Johnson and Smith found the basket to tie the ball game up at 79-79, but the Eagles responded quickly with a three and a free throw to put the Barons into an 83-79 deficit with 36 seconds left in the game. The game ended with Faulkner putting up four free throws to beat Brewton-Parker, 87-79.
Inside The Statistics
- BPC shot for 37.7 % (26-of-69) from the floor, 36.7% (11-of-30) from three, and a season-best 88.9% (16-of-18) from the foul line.
- Johnson led the team with 23 points and five rebounds, followed by Smith who notched 22 points and snagged six boards.
- Smith also dished out a game-high eight assists for the second time this season while gathering five of the Barons' seven steals on the defensive side of the ball.
- Burroughs also scored 11 points and had four rebounds.
- Sanders picked up nine points, six rebounds, and four blocks.
- Faulkner owned the glass, outrebounding BPC 45-40
- The Eagles coughed the ball up 14 times with the Barons picking up half of those.
