Strong Second Half Not Enough for Men’s Basketball in Loss to Coastal Georgia

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Men's Basketball took on Coastal Georgia in Gillis Gymnasium on Monday afternoon.

The Barons (4-6) fell to the Mariners (5-3) in a tough 75-68 loss in non-conference action, despite a solid second half.

How It Happened | First Half

The energy was high early for the Barons as a huge dunk from Grant Sanders and a layup from Lance Smith gave BPC an early four-point advantage. Coastal Georgia responded with a jumper and a trey for their first lead of the game nearly three minutes in.

After a pair of buckets from Damarcus Johnson Jr. and Ferlin Joseph Jr., the Mariners answered with a 12-2 run over three minutes of play to capture a seven-point lead with 12:14 on the clock.

Over the next seven minutes, the Mariners pieced together a 13-5 run to take a 30-15 lead with 5:16 left to play. The Barons struggled to pull the deficit down to single figures as the visitors on the scoreboard finished the half with a 39-24 lead.

How It Happened | Second Half

Brewton-Parker struck first in the second half with a five-point spurt led by a trey from Sanders and a layup from Burroughs. Both teams fought in a back-and-forth battle for a moment, but Brewton-Parker managed to cut the deficit down to just eight points with 14:14 remaining.

Zsolt Boros took three trips to the line for five points to help cut the deficit down to seven after three minutes of play. Over the next couple of minutes, the Barons battled their way back into the game with a shift in momentum from Burroughs and the squad, cutting the CCGA lead down to four with 9:08 left.

Coastal Georgia shifted momentum back in their favor with a 10-4 run, scoring seven from the foul line to move back into a 10-point advantage after chewing nearly four minutes off the clock. Despite a 17-point charge from Brewton-Parker, it seemed that Coastal Georgia managed to answer just about every time as the Mariners were able to hold on to a 75-68 victory.
