MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker men's basketball returned to familiar territory with a non-conference home contest against Thomas (Ga.) in Gillis Gymnasium on Thursday night.
The Barons (3-6) slipped up against the Night Hawks (9-2) in an 87-75 loss.
How It Happened | 1st Half
- After an opening bucket from Thomas, Ferlin Joseph equalized the game to give the Barons their first score of the game.
- Zailan Blue converted an and-one play to give BPC their first lead of the game at the 17:59 mark.
- With the game tied 6-6 and nearly 17 minutes on the clock, the Night Hawks began a 9-0 run to lead 15-6.
- A free throw and a layup from Chance Hatcher knocked down the BPC deficit to six points with 14:25 left in the half.
- Thomas answered with back-to-back jumpers to pull back to a 10-point advantage while taking two minutes off the clock.
- At the 11:39 mark, Corey Thomas scored his first bucket of the season to pull the Barons' deficit under double figures, but the Night Hawks responded with a trey to jump to a 22-11 lead.
- Brewton-Parker went on a 10-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Dane Fisher to pull the deficit down to just one point with 5:59 to play.
- Thomas moved back to a five-point lead with four free throws just moments later.
- After trading scoring trips, the Barons found themselves just one point behind with 3:29 remaining in the half. Scores from Hatcher and Jeff Huff Jr. brought the Night Hawks' lead down to just 28-27.
- The Night Hawks closed out the first half on a 1024 run to lead 40-31 at the break.
How It Happened | 2nd Half
- The Barons opened the second half with a six-point surge led by Lance Smith and Blue to knock the deficit down to just three points in the first 90 seconds of action.
- Both teams shared scoring trips down the floor to fluctuate the Night Hawks' lead from four to six points over the next minute.
- After going down 49-41 at the 16:48 mark, the Barons were able to pull within five as Joseph gathered three points. However, Thomas responded with back-to-back buckets to boost to a nine-point lead.
- A few minutes later, BPC managed to piece together an 11-3 run which leveled the game 56-56 with 12 minutes left in the game.
- Over the next couple of minutes, Thomas managed to go back to a three-point advantage but a huge trey from Fisher equalized the game at 59-59 with 9:31 on the clock.
- An assist from Fisher found Thomas for a fastbreak dunk to level the score after a Night Hawk jumper.
- With 6:48 on the clock, the Barons found themselves down just 64-62, but that was the closest they would get for the remainder of the game.
- The Night Hawks ignited into an 11-0 run to pull away to a 75-62 lead, leaving just under four minutes on the clock.
- Five points from Smith knocked the deficit down to just 10 points, but the Barons struggled to put together a solid enough run to force a comeback game.
- Smith highlighted an 8-4 run with a pair of three-pointers to pull the game to just a six-point difference with less than a minute left to play.
- Thomas secured the win from the free-throw line, shooting 6-for-6 from the charity stripe down the final stretch.

- BPC shot for 40.3% from the field (29-of-72), 25.8% from three (25.8%), and 52.9% (9-of-17) from the foul line.
- Smith led the offensive efforts with 24 points while snagging 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season and eighth game with double-digit points.
- Smith dished out three assists while also picking up three steals.
- Joseph scored 10 points while Hatcher snagged a team-leading 11 rebounds. Hatcher also scored nine points alongside Fisher's nine.
