Barons Fall Short at Paine, 67-64

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Brewton-Parker men's basketball traveled to Augusta, Georgia for a non-conference matchup at Paine (Ga.) on Tuesday night.

The Barons (3-5) fell short on the road to the Lions (4-6) in a tight, 67-64 loss.

How It Happened | 1st Half

  • Paine opened the game on a 6-1 run in the first two minutes, capturing control of the lead early.
  • Ferlin Joseph connected on a jumper for the BPC field goal on the night, pulling the deficit down to just three points with 16:54 left.
  • The Lions answered with back-to-back scores to lead 10-3 just a minute later.
  • After remaining at a seven-point disadvantage, the Barons found themselves just one point back with Jordan Johnson converting two-straight treys at the 14:06 and 13:39 mark.
  • Over the next two minutes, Paine surged on an 11-0 run to lead 23-11 with eleven minutes remaining.
  • The Barons pulled the deficit down to seven points with six unanswered points coming from a pair of jumpers from Emmanuel Green and a score from Chance Hatcher.
  • Paine moved their lead back to double figures with 7:34 on the clock, but the Barons gathered another set of six unanswered points to pull the deficit back to just four points with 4:53 remaining.
  • The Lions closed out the half, outscoring BPC 14-4 to lead 44-30 at the halftime break.

How It Happened | 2nd Half

  • Brewton-Parker began the second half with jumpers from Lance Smith and Jeff Huff Jr. to pull the Lions' edge to 10 points.
  • Paine responded with a pair of buckets to reclaim the 14-point advantage, just moments later.
  • Over the next several minutes, the Barons began to claw their way back into a single-digit deficit with a 7-2 run highlighted by five points from Huff Jr.
  • BPC found a spark that led to an 11-2 run to level the score 54-54 with 7:42 remaining.
  • Paine bounced back to a four-point lead before a bucket from Hatcher pulled it back to a one-possession score with 5:32 on the clock.
  • The Lions put up six-straight points to jump out to an eight-point advantage, leaving two and a half minutes on the scoreboard.
  • Brewton-Parker went on an 8-2 run to pull the game back to just a two-point deficit, 66-64 with 0:37 seconds left.
  • Unfortunately, BPC was unable to connect on another shot while the Lions hit a free throw to make the score 67-64 as the Lions held off the Barons in the final seconds.

Inside The Statistics

  • As a team, BPC shot for 34.8% (24-of-69) from the floor, 36.8% (7-of-19) from three, and 60% (9-of-15) from the foul line.
  • Hatcher led the way with 13 points shooting for 50% (6-of-12) from the field while also gathering three steals and leading alongside Jospeh with seven boards each.
  • Johnson also scored in double figures with 11 points.
  • Both Smith and Hatcher led with three assists with Johnson picking up two.

  • The Barons held a 45-39 advantage off the glass.
  • Both teams gave up 16 turnovers each with Paine leading 8-7 in steals.
  • BPC's bench produced 41 points on the night while Paine's produced just five.
