Men’s Basketball Falls 88-71 to Stillman

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker men's basketball returned to familiar territory on Saturday afternoon, playing hosts to Stillman (Ala.) to continue SSAC action in Gillis Gymnasium.

The Barons (3-4, 2-2 SSAC) fought hard to remain in control of a tight game in the first half, but the Tigers (5-3, 2-1 SSAC) surged in the second half to win 88-71.

How It Happened | 1st Half

  • Brewton-Parker opened with a 6-1 in the first couple of minutes as Ferlin Joseph gathered four of the first six points of the game.
  • The Tigers responded with a pair of scores to pull the deficit down to just one point with 15:56 remaining in the half.
  • Zailan Blue recorded five points in BPC's 7-0 run that boosted the advantage to a 13-5 lead with just under 14 minutes to play.
  • Stillman outscored Brewton-Parker 9-4 over the next few minutes to move the deficit down to four points before Lance Smith and Chance Hatcher converted a pair of free throws each to give BPC another eight-point advantage.
  • The Tigers began to slowly build up momentum that finally broke the deficit down to a one-possession game with 4:18 to play, down 28-25.
  • Shortly after SC was able to get the deficit down to two points, but BPC took advantage of a three-point foul line effort from Blue and a fastbreak bucket from Jeff Huff Jr. to hold a 34-17 advantage with 3:12 to play.
  • Stillman closed out the half with a 10-4 run, capped by a trey in the final seconds to pull BPC's lead to just 38-37 at the break.

How It Happened | 2nd Half

  • Huff Jr. opened the scoring for BPC with a free throw before Stillman scored seven unanswered points to claim a 44-39 lead with 17:44 on the clock.
  • Huff Jr. answered with a jumper, but the Tigers had a four-point answer to lead 48-41.
  • Brewton-Parker outscored Stillman 7-4 over the next couple of minutes to pull the deficit down to just four points with 13:54 remaining.
  • Stillman then went on to surge into a commanding 12-point lead with an 8-0, leaving 11:14 on the clock.
  • Smith picked up three points to put the Barons' deficit under double figures, but the Tigers continued to provide answers.
  • After a trey from Blue and a pair of free throws from Joseph at the 7:05 mark, BPC found themselves just eight points behind.
  • Unfortunately, Stillman ignited into a 19-point lead over nearly three minutes by going on a 12-1 run.
  • Brewton-Parker managed to get as close as 12 points with 1:38 to play off a 7-0 run led by Smith's four-point effort, but that proved to be the closest they would be for the remainder of the game.
  • The Tigers closed out the game by outscoring the Barons 10-5 to secure the 88-71 victory.

Inside The Statistics

  • As a team, BPC shot for 40% (24-of-60) from the floor, 25% (6-of-24) from three, and 73.9% (17-of-23) from the foul line.
  • Blue led with 23 points and three steals followed by Smith with 16 points and five rebounds.
  • Joseph also picked up a double-digit scoring performance with 11 points and snagged five boards in the process.
  • The Barons held a narrow 8-7 edge in steals while the Tigers won the turnover with a narrow 10-11 edge.
