Mount Vernon, GA — Brewton-Parker Men's Soccer battled until the final whistle Saturday afternoon but came up just short in a 4-3 loss to Milligan University.
The Barons struck first when William Bayles found the back of the net in the 13th minute, giving BPCU a 1-0 advantage that held through halftime. Brewton-Parker added to its lead early in the second half when André Xavier scored off an assist from Biel Ibanez in the 51st minute to make it 2-0.
Milligan responded quickly, scoring three unanswered goals over the next 11 minutes to take a 3-2 advantage. BPCU answered in the 66th minute when Aitor Novoa connected off another assist from Ibanez, leveling the match at 3-3.
The match remained even until the 81st minute, when Milligan's Freddie Zinn converted a penalty kick to give the Buffaloes the eventual 4-3 victory.
Brewton-Parker finished with 10 shots, including six on goal, while Milligan recorded 19 shots with 10 on frame. Bayles, Xavier and Novoa each scored for the Barons, while Ibanez finished with two assists. Goalkeeper Diego Carrera recorded six saves in 90 minutes of action.
The Barons will now hit the road for a two-match trip, beginning Thursday, Sept. 10 at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, before traveling to New Orleans to face Xavier University of Louisiana on Saturday, Sept. 12.
