Cleveland, GA — The Lady Barons put together a dominant opening day at the Bear Invitational on Friday, going 3-0 with victories over Rust College, Montreat College and host Truett McConnell University. The Lady Barons improved to 7-1 overall and secured the No. 2 seed heading into Saturday's tournament play.
Brewton-Parker opened the day against Rust College, dropping a tight opening set 27-25 before taking control of the match. The Lady Barons won the next three sets 25-9, 25-19 and 25-15 to secure a 3-1 victory. BPCU finished with 50 kills and 13 service aces while holding Rust to 14 kills.
Ana Villarreal and Patrycja Kabala led the attack with 11 kills apiece, while Nicolly Chaves added 10. Kabala also delivered six aces and 10 digs, while Taylor Lamontagne directed the offense with 28 assists. Amme Mobley added three blocks.
The Lady Barons carried that momentum into their second match, defeating Montreat College 3-1. BPCU took the first set 25-15 before Montreat responded with a 25-23 win in the second. Brewton-Parker quickly regained control, taking the final two sets 25-14 and 25-18. The Lady Barons hit .255 for the match while recording 41 kills and 14 aces.
Kabala and Mobley each recorded 10 kills against Montreat, with Chaves adding eight. Kabala added four aces, while Villarreal contributed three aces and a team-high 10 digs. Lamontagne finished with 19 assists, and Daniela Galarza added nine.
Brewton-Parker saved its only sweep of the day for the finale against host Truett McConnell. The Lady Barons completed the perfect day with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-23 victory, holding the Bears to just 17 kills and a -.049 hitting percentage.
Kabala delivered one of her strongest performances of the day, finishing with 13 kills on a .632 hitting percentage, three aces and 12 digs. Chaves added eight kills, while Mobley finished with seven. Lamontagne recorded 30 assists and 13 digs to help BPCU complete the sweep.
After three wins on Friday, the Lady Barons enter Saturday as the No. 2 seed and will face No. 7 seed Milligan University at 8 a.m.
