Barons Sweep Skyhawks

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Brewton-Parker Christian University (BPCU) Barons softball team hosted the Skyhawks of Point University in a thrilling SSAC conference doubleheader on April 10, 2026. The Barons walked off game one in the bottom of the 10 thanks to Destiny Lucas taking game one 10-9, and then dominated game two, winning 8-3.

Game one saw the Skyhawks score early, scratching two across in the first to grab a 2-0 lead. The Barons' offense exploded in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs. Tori Wright's two-run double keyed the inning, and Lucas added a triple as the Barons flipped the game with extra-base power. The game turned again in the sixth. Point sent six runs across in the top half to move ahead 8-5. The Barons answered in the bottom of the inning with a three-run rally of its own. Alyssa Usrey lined a two-run single, and the Barons pulled even at 8-8 after Wright had helped spark the inning.

Neither team could find anything after that, going into extra innings. In the 10th inning, the tiebreaker rule went into effect, putting a runner on second to start the inning. The Skyhawks bunted the run over and then scored the run on a fielder's choice when the Barons failed to get the runner out at the plate, giving them a 9-8 lead. Wright would once again come up clutch for the Barons, scoring the runner on second with a leadoff triple, and then Destiny Lucas would walk off the game with an RBI single into right field. Maeleigh Burns, who came in relief, qualified for the win after pitching 3.0 complete and shutting down the Skyhawks offense.

Game two saw the Barons strike first in the opening inning when Wright singled, stole two bases, and moved into scoring position. Anna Green then brought Wright home on a sacrifice groundout for a 1-0 lead. Brewton-Parker did its major damage in the third, capitalizing on timely hitting, walks, and defensive mistakes by Point. Green delivered an RBI single during the rally, and Wright added a two-run single as the Barons sent seven runs across to break the game open and take an 8-0 lead. The Skyhawks would try to rally, scoring one in the top of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but the Barons would turn to Makayla Croft, who would close it out in the seventh to complete the sweep.

The Barons will have a quick turnaround as they prepare to host the Eagles of Faulkner University (Ala.) on April 11, 2026, in another SSAC clash.
