Barons Sweep Toppers in Doubleheader

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Brewton-Parker Christian University Barons baseball team used a pair of explosive offensive performances and steady pitching to complete a doubleheader sweep of Blue Mountain Christian University (Miss.) on March 6, 2026, in Mount Vernon, taking Game one, 7-1 in seven innings, before capping the day with a 17-8 victory in Game two. The Barons set the tone with a four-run first inning in the opener, then put the nightcap away with an eight-run outburst in the bottom of the eighth.

In game one, Brewton-Parker seized control immediately with a four-run first inning and never trailed. Jeremi Lara opened the scoring with a two-run double to left, and Marquette Gibson followed with an RBI single to center as the Barons sent a statement early. The Barons added three more runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 7-0, giving their pitching staff a substantial cushion to work with.

Michael Son powered the Barons' offense in the opener, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Son's big swing came in the fifth inning, when he delivered a two-run home run that pushed the advantage to 7-0. Brewton-Parker finished with seven runs on seven hits while drawing a pair of walks and stranding just one runner on base, maximizing nearly every opportunity. On the mound, Brewton-Parker pitchers limited Blue Mountain Christian to just four hits and one run over seven innings. Steven Trinidad led the Barons, throwing 6.0 innings, giving up just three hits and one run, before turning it over to William Whitlock to slam the door shut and take game one.

Game two followed a similar script but turned into a higher-scoring contest before the Barons pulled away late. The Barons built a 3-1 lead in the first, highlighted by a two-run home run from Caleb Strott as part of a three-run frame. Brewton-Parker added three more runs in the second and two in the third, with Raul Morales driving a key double to left in the third to extend the margin to 8-1. Blue Mountain chipped away with a three-run fourth, aided by a sacrifice fly and defensive miscues, and added single runs in the seventh and three more in the top of the eighth to close within one at 9-8.

Facing a one-run game in the bottom of the eighth, the Barons responded decisively. Brewton-Parker sent eight runs across in the inning to break the contest open and secure the sweep. Fred Diaz delivered the biggest blow with a three-run home run that stretched the lead to 14-8, part of a six-RBI performance. The Barons combined patience and power in the frame, capping a night in which they drew 15 walks and posted 13 hits.

Strott capped a standout doubleheader by going 4-for-5 in game two with two home runs, three RBI, and three runs scored, including a solo shot in the sixth that briefly pushed the advantage back to five. Anthony Savarese added two hits, three RBI, and three runs scored, continuing his productive day at the plate after a multi-hit effort in the opener. Overall, Brewton-Parker totaled 17 runs on 13 hits and 15 walks, converting traffic into runs despite leaving 12 on base. Jacoby Cox started on the mound and gave the Barons 5.0 solid innings, giving up just two before the bullpen took over. William Whitlock once again was asked to close the door on the Toppers and end the night.

The Barons will look to carry the momentum into the final game of the series on March 7, 2026, in Mount Vernon.
