MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - Brewton-Parker Christian University Barons used a stifling defense and efficient shooting to seize control in the first half and never relinquished the lead, defeating the Blue Mountain Christian University Toppers (Miss.) 77-62 on February 3, 2026, in Mount Vernon.
Â
The Barons broke things open with a decisive first-half run, turning an early deficit into a double-digit advantage on the way to a 41-29 lead at the break. Brewton-Parker then maintained its edge throughout the second half, answering each Blue Mountain push and closing out the conference matchup to grab their eighth conference win of the year.
Gil Gonzalez led the Barons with 21 points, five rebounds, and four steals in 36 minutes, providing a consistent scoring option and defensive presence. Jayden Hill added 15 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 night at the free-throw line, while Abraham Garjah supplied 13 points, five assists, five steals, and three rebounds as the Barons' backcourt set the tone at both ends.
Â
The Barons continued to control the interior after the break, opening the second half with a series of high-percentage looks. Gonzalez threw down a dunk off a feed from Garjah at 17:59 of the second quarter to make it 43-32, then finished another dunk in transition at the 15:17 mark to stretch the lead to 49-34. Brewton-Parker's largest cushion came when Xavier Gordon-Somers converted a layup assisted by Hill for a 55-34 advantage with 13:55 to play. A late Gonzalez dunk with 45 seconds remaining pushed the score to 77-60 and effectively sealed the outcome.
Â
Head Coach Leonard Epps reflected on the outcome after the game, saying, "Excited to get this long week of games started with a win. I thought this was one of our more complete games. We had a short 3-4 minute lull in the 2nd half when we got a big lead, but we recovered and finished strong. Playing your best basketball in February is always the goal, and I think we are right there."
Â
The Barons will continue their final stretch of the season by hosting two more conference games starting February 5, 2026, when the Faulkner Eagles roll into town. The Barons will be looking to split the season after being beaten on the road by the Eagles earlier in the season.
