Barons Swept by Mariners

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Brewton-Parker Christian University softball team struggled in a doubleheader against the College of Coastal Georgia, getting swept. The Barons dropped game one 8-0 in six innings before battling back late in game two but falling short 8-4.

Game one started as a struggle for the Barons, who could not do anything against the Mariner pitcher Rylee Mills. Offensively, Brewton-Parker produced baserunners but struggled to string hits together against Mills, who scattered five hits in a complete-game shutout for Coastal Georgia. The Barons were held without an extra-base hit and finished with one strikeout and no walks, limiting opportunities to extend innings. Brewton-Parker left five runners on base and was unable to take advantage of any defensive miscues, as Coastal Georgia played error-free behind its starter.

Game two saw the Mariners strike first in the bottom of the first inning and break the game open with a four-run third to build a 5-0 lead. Brewton-Parker answered with a run in the fourth and mounted a late push in the seventh, but Coastal's 12-hit attack, highlighted by Rylie Smith's 3-for-3 day and four RBI, kept the Barons at arm's length in the seven-inning contest.

Brewton-Parker got on the board at the top of the fourth. Tori Wright doubled to spark the frame, moved up on a wild pitch, and came in to score on an RBI single from Alyssa Usrey, trimming the deficit to 5-1. The Barons held Coastal scoreless in the fourth, but the Mariners struck again in the fifth, when Smith delivered the dagger with a three-run homer.

The Barons refused to go away quietly in their final at-bat. Trailing by seven in the top of the seventh, Brewton-Parker pieced together its best offensive inning of the day. Wright came through again, this time with a two-run triple to cut the margin to 8-3. Moments later, Destiny Lucas reached on a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing another run to score and bringing the Barons within 8-4 before the rally was extinguished.

Wright led the Brewton-Parker offense, finishing with two hits, including a double and a triple, to go with two runs scored and an RBI. The Barons totaled six hits, including one double and one triple, and stole two bases while leaving five runners on base. Brewton-Parker's pitching staff worked six innings, allowing 12 hits and eight runs with two walks. Starter Makayla Croft was saddled with the loss after four innings of work, allowing seven runs on nine hits.

Head Coach Madison Herrin reflected on the day, saying, "Ran into a really good Coastal Georgia team. We competed but got outplayed. We will get back at it tomorrow."

The Barons will have an opportunity to correct their mistakes with a quick turnaround homestand. Hosting the Pioneers of Spartanburg Methodist College on February 26, 2026.
