Barons Split Doubleheader

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Brewton-Parker Christian University Barons baseball team split a doubleheader on February 21, 2026, against the University of St. Francis (Ind.) and Bryan College. The Barons dominated in game one against the Cougars of St. Francis with an explosion of homeruns at the plate, taking the game 16-1 in a seven-inning game. Unfortunately, the Barons were unable to overcome the Lions of Bryan and dropped game two 14-6.

The Barons seized control immediately in the bottom of the first, sending 10 batters to the plate and building a 6-0 cushion that Saint Francis never challenged. Fred Guzman Diaz opened his standout day with a home run as part of the outburst, while Raul Morales reached on an error that allowed three runs to score in the frame. Brewton-Parker capitalized on Saint Francis' defensive miscues and set the tone early in the neutral-site matchup.

Hayden Berry made the early offense stand up, working five strong innings to earn the win. The starter allowed just one earned run on three hits, striking out eight and walking four while throwing 98 pitches. Backed by a defense that committed no errors, Berry limited traffic and kept Saint Francis off the board until the fifth inning, when they scored off a sacrifice fly.

Brewton-Parker continued to add on throughout the middle innings. In the second, Michael Son doubled to extend the lead to 8-0, one of three runs he scored on the day while reaching base three times, including two hit-by-pitches. Diaz struck again in the fourth with his second home run of the game, pushing the margin to 9-0 and finishing a three-RBI performance in a 3-for-4 outing that also included a walk. Coleson Smith delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth as part of a four-run inning that made it 13-1. In the sixth, Morales capped his productive day at the plate with a solo home run, part of a three-run inning that invoked the run rule. Jeremi Lara finished the game with a 3-4 day at the plate with a double and an RBI.

Game two, Bryan seized control immediately with a five-run first inning, then broke open a tight game with a five-run fifth highlighted by a four-run homer that pushed the lead to 13–6. Brewton-Parker rallied from the early 5–0 deficit to tie the game in the fourth and briefly pull within two in the fifth, but Bryan's 15-hit, three-homer attack ultimately decided the contest.

Offensively, the Barons finished with six runs on eight hits and six walks, showing resilience after the slow start. Marquette Gibson turned in a strong performance at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI to lead the Brewton-Parker lineup. Diaz matched him with a productive day, collecting two hits, including a solo homer, scoring once, driving in a run, and adding a stolen base to spark the top of the order. Still, Brewton-Parker stranded opportunities as Bryan pitchers worked out of traffic, recording 10 strikeouts to limit further damage.

The Barons will prepare for a three-game conference series against Faulkner University (Ala.) starting on February 27, 2026, before returning home to Mount Vernon.
