Lady Barons Stumble Against Middle Georgia State University

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Lady Barons Volleyball team traveled to Middle Georgia State University to take on the Knights in a conference game today. Despite having the better overall record, the Lady Barons got swept today, falling to 0-3 in conference play this season. The Lady Barons are still in a position to bounce back and have a successful conference record but will need to learn quickly from their mistakes and bounce back for the remainder of the season. The Knights swept the Lady Barons in three sets, and while all three sets were close, the Lady Barons could not recover.

Coach Obed Quiles spoke to us after the game and shared how he felt about the team's performance. "We didn't show up ready to play today. We have to compete better when the sets are close like this. The team played today like they thought the Knights would roll over and just hand them a win without earning it. I hope they take this as a wake-up call for how difficult conference play is. We have to earn every win, and  until we start playing with that mentality, we will continue to get beat like we did today."

First Set

The Lady Barons started the match with nine kills and a hitting percentage of .217. While the set was back and forth and both teams traded points, the Lady Barons failed to capitalize on some key opportunities and never took control like they had in the past. The Lady Barons allowed the Knights to jump out to a lead and played the rest of the set, only tying it up at 12 before going down again. Brewton-Parker never managed to get a lead in the first set and ended up losing it 25-21.

Second Set

The Lady Barons were in a similar situation in set number two, trading scoring chances and never taking control of the set. Brewton-Parker ended the set with only 11 kills and a hitting percentage of .100. Both teams traded the lead back and forth until it was tied at eight, when the Knights took the lead and never gave it back, going on to win set two 25-20.

Third Set

The Lady Barons did their best to gain some momentum back but were unable to take control of set number three. With only 11 kills and a hitting percentage of .132, Middle Georgia took an early lead. While the Lady Barons managed to tie it up at five and take a brief lead, they lost the lead, and the Knights never gave it back, going on to win the final set 25-21.
