Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Barons Come Up Short Against SCAD Savannah

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Barons Men's Soccer team did everything they could last night against SCAD Savannah to try and get their first win. The Barons showed an incredibly strong defensive performance, forcing the Bees to retreat and reenter throughout the first half. The Barons had a great showing despite all of the Bees shot attempts and scoring opportunities. SCAD had taken 45 shots by the end of the match and had 17 on goal. The Barons goalie Gerardo Galicia made 16 saves last night, only conceding one goal on a tricky free kick just inside the box deflected off the wall and in.

Coach Bob Neuman shared his thoughts on a tough opponent. "SCAD, under John, will always be a really good side. Really well organized and structured. We knew that coming in, so we wanted that game so close to the start of our conference campaign.

It's always difficult to lose a game that was so closely contested, but that's how the game goes sometimes. We will have to focus on the things that we can control and trust that the rest will go our way at the weekend."

First Half

The Barons showed great composure despite SCAD's relentless attack and taking 23 shots versus the Barons' three. The Barons were forced into a defensive battle and saw their keeper make save after save. SCAD had two corner kicks in the first half, both of which led to scoring opportunities that the Barons forced away. The Barons were strong on the ball and showed a good transition game when they could. The Barons went into the half with a zero-zero tie.

Second half

In the second half, the Bees turned up the pressure even more after a relatively clean first half with SCAD receiving the only yellow card of the first half; the second half saw more scoring opportunities and a chippier style of play. SCAD had 22 shots in the second half and six corners, giving them even more chances. The scoreless tie was inevitably broken in the 63 minute when Mario Goic scored off a free kick that deflected the ball off the defender's wall. After conceding this go-ahead goal, the Barons showed off their toughest and most aggressive attack of the night, working hard for the last 25 minutes, determined to create scoring chances to try and tie the game. While the Barons ultimately could not do this, it shows much promise for what might be coming the rest of the season. The Barons hope to carry this defensive performance into the remainder of their games, and hopefully, we see more of this new invigorated attack.
