Barons Soar Over Eagles

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Barons Men's Soccer team clawed out their first season victory over the Pensacola Christian College Eagles in a dramatic four-to-one final. Despite falling behind one to nothing, the Barons held in and clawed their way back to victory. The Eagles blowing a lead was nothing new today, and the Barons knew they just had to wait for opportunities to come. The Barons came out of half and showed their best response of the season and came back to score four unanswered goals to claim their first win of the season.

Coach Bob Neuman shared his thoughts on a tough opponent. "We spent a lot of time this week defining the characteristics of what it means to be a Baron. I think the guys did a really good job of embodying those characteristics. They showed belief, unity, and discipline. I'm happy with the work they put in to earn the results, as we're on the eve of the conference schedule. Now, we must shift our focus to Faulkner on Thursday."

First Half

The Barons showed great composure despite Giovanni Pauliello's goal in the 19th minute. They managed to stay within themselves and not make unforced errors, not allowing the Eagles to grow their lead. The Barons saw a clean first half and even managed to take ten shots, forcing their keeper to make seven saves. The Barons had five corner kicks, generating chances and forcing the Eagles back into their defensive third throughout the first half.

Second half

In the second half, the Barons were given the ultimate equalizing opportunity with a penalty shot in the 47th minute for Francisco Martins. Martins wasted no time scoring the equalizer, and the momentum swung from there. The Barons took the energy and scored just over two minutes later with a brilliant goal by Derventz Altidor. Lazar Milosavljevic from Chris Bowen would continue the scoring party at 56:23 to give the Barons some much-appreciated insurance. When some teams would revert and focus solely on defense, the Barons still looked for opportunities to find the back of the net and found one at 62:47 when Feyisope Osifeso notched his first of the season with a great assist from Lazar.

Stats

  • The Barons and Eagles were tied in shots at 19.

  • The Barons led in corners seven to five.

  • The Eagles led in saves 11 to five.

  • The Barons led in fouls 11 to ten.

  • The Eagles and Barons both finished with two yellow cards aside.

Next Up

The Barons will look to carry this momentum into their next match at Faulkner University.
