Lady Barons Pick Up a Win at No. 18 William Carey with Saturday Split

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Brewton-Parker Softball continued their weekend road trip with a doubleheader against No. 18-ranked William Carey (Miss) in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Barons (21-13, 9-9 SSAC) split with the Crusaders (24-10, 12-4 SSAC) by picking up a big 5-2 win in game one and slipping in a 7-2 loss in game two.

How It Happened | G1 – BPC 5, WCU 2

After a scoreless first inning, the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. In the top of the third, Ashley Wilson picked up a single which was followed by a walk from Alexis Bradshaw and a single from Destiny Lucas to load the bases. Tori Wright hit a single to right field to score Wilson and Bradshaw. Lucas picked up a run off a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Alyssa Usrey scored Wright to give the Lady Barons a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third, William Carey gathered two hits and scored a run, cutting BPC's lead to two. Brewton-Parker extended their lead in the fifth inning when Lucas made it on base with a single and advanced to third on a wild pitch and a Wright single. Usrey brought Lucas in with another sacrifice fly. BPC held off the Crusaders in the next two innings to take a 5-2 win in game one.   

Inside the Statistics
  • Both teams gathered seven hits. Lucas led with two hits and two runs while Wright had three hits and one run.
  • Wilson picked up one hit and one run while Bradshaw had had one run.
  • Hailey Gabrich gathered a hit
  • Natalie O'Neal (11-7) pitched seven innings and gathered two strikeouts while giving up seven hits hits, and two runs.

To start game two, Bradshaw made it on base with a walk and stole second before advancing to third on an error. Wright reached first on a fielder's choice bringing Bradshaw home in the process to give the Lady Barons a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third, Bradshaw and Lucas reached on William Carey errors before Wright brought Bradshaw home for the 2-0 lead. The Crusaders gathered momentum in the bottom half of the inning, gathering four hits and bringing in three runs to take the lead.

William Carey kept the pressure on as they raked up four more runs with three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Lady Barons were able to keep the Crusaders from scoring but were unable to score themselves in the last few innings, leaving themselves with a 7-2 loss for game two.

Inside the Statistics
  • BPC trailed 11-6 in hits.
  • Bradshaw led the team with a hit and two runs, while Gabrich had three hits.
  • Wright and Skyler Strickland each had a hit.
  • Kira Altman (10-6) pitched three innings and produced one strikeout while giving up three walks, nine hits, and seven runs.
  • Maeleigh Burns pitched two innings and gave up two hits.
