Lady Barons Split at Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Softball traveled to Savannah, Ga. for non-conference action at NCAA Division II opponent Savannah State on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Barons (27-17) split with the Tigers (14-27) with a tough six-inning loss in game one followed by a 7-3 victory in game two.

How It Happened | G1 – BPC 2, SSU 10 (6 Inn.)

Brewton-Parker left a pair stranded in the first despite notching two hits and taking advantage of a passed ball to move into a position to score. Savannah State opened with a run scored on two hits as well as a BPC error to take a one-run lead.

The Tigers followed up with four hits, which included a triple, to score two more runs for a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the second. The Lady Barons eventually placed a run on the board with Ashley Wilson and Alexis Bradshaw leading with singles before Destiny Lucas pushed a run home on a ground out.

SSU moved to a 4-1 lead with an RBI groundout of their own before advancing to a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two-RBI double. In the sixth, BPC produced three hits with an RBI single from Wilson scoring the second run of the game.

Savannah State shut the door on Brewton-Parker in the sixth inning, scoring four runs on six hits to force the run-rule and winning with a 10-2 advantage.

Inside the Statistics
  • SSU led 15-10 in hits.
  • Four Lady Barons led with two hits each.

How It Happened | G2 – BPC 7, SSU 3

Brewton-Parker improved in game two early with a two-run advantage in the first inning as Tori Wright notched a two-RBI single to left field after a leadoff walk from Bradshaw and a fielder's choice from Lucas.

The Lady Barons continued the offensive production into the third inning as they recorded hits from Wright and BryAnn Pound. BPC took advantage of a wild pitch to score Wright for a 3-0 lead before scoring on an error as well as another wild pitch for a 5-0 lead. Savannah State eventually responded in the third inning with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit down to four runs.

A single from Bradshaw and a two-out double from Hailey Gabrich scored Bradshaw to give the Lady Barons a 6-1 lead in the top of the fourth. The Tigers answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI groundout and an RBI base hit to cut the BPC lead down to three.

Brewton-Parker moved to a 7-3 lead in the fifth sparked by a leadoff single from Pound being pushed to third with a stolen base as well as a sacrifice bunt from Chloe Strickland. BPC scored the run with an RBI groundout from Kira Altman. Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest as BPC secured the game with a four-run lead.
