Lady Barons Take Down Tigers In Tuesday Afternoon Sweep

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Softball took a break from SSAC action to take on NCAA DII opponent Edward Waters (Fla.) in Mount Vernon, Ga. on Tuesday afternoon.

Brewton-Parker (20-10) swept the Tigers (25-13) with a 7-4 victory in game one and an 11-6 win in game two.

How It Happened | G1 – BPC 7, EWU 4

Edward Waters struck in the first inning with three hits to push in three runs. BPC responded with two runs in the bottom of the first. Alexis Bradshaw led off with a single and a stolen base before Destiny Lucas hit a single to put runners on the corners. Alyssa Usrey put up a sacrifice fly to bring Bradshaw in. Taylor Elliott barreled a ball into center field for a single, scoring Lucas in the process to close out the inning down 3-2.

After a scoreless second inning, the Lady Barons picked up some momentum in the bottom of the third inning. Lucas got on base from a walk with a double from Tori Wright bringing her in to tie the game at 3-3. A double from Elliott gave BPC the lead by bringing Wright home. Rylie Lumley pinch ran for Elliott and scored by stealing third and advancing home off a Tiger throwing error giving BPC a 5-3 advantage.

The Tigers would make it a one-run game in the top of the fifth with a walk and a hit. Wright picked up a single and a stolen base to get to second and another double from Elliott brought Wright home. Chloe Strickland gathered a single to score Elliott,
and after holding the Tigers in the top of the seventh, BPC took game one with a 7-4 victory.

Inside the Statistics
  • Brewton-Parker led 10-6 in hits with Elliott leading the team with three hits and one run while Wright followed with two hits and two runs.
  • Lucas had one hit and two runs while Bradshaw had a hit and a run.
  • Natalie O'Neal (11-6) pitched five innings and gathered three strikeouts while giving up four walks, four hits, and four runs.
  • Maeleigh Burns pitched two innings and gathered one strikeout while giving up one walk and two hits for her second save of the season
How It Happened | G2 – BPC 11, EWU 6

After a scoreless first inning to start the game, the Tigers picked up three hits to take a two-run lead. A double from Usrey kickstarted some momentum for the Lady Barons. A single from Elliott brought in Usrey for BPC's first run of the game. Strickland got Elliott home with a single, and Ashley Wilson picked up an RBI triple to the end the inning with a 3-2 advantage for the Lady Barons.

Edward Waters tied the game up at 3-3 in the third inning with a run from two hits and took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning with another two hits.

Brewton-Parker found a groove in the bottom of the fourth with BryAnn Pound getting a single and Annaliese Martinez reaching on an error. Lumley got Pound home and put runners on the corners. Lucas brought Martinez in with a single to left field giving the Lady Barons a 5-4 lead.

A single from Wright and a Tiger fielding error scored two runs from Lucas and Lumley. BPC ended the inning with a double down the left field line from Usrey to score Wright giving the Lady Barons an 8-4 lead.

BPC held Edward Waters scoreless in the top of the fifth and kept the pressure on in the bottom of the inning. Strickland led off with a single and an RBI double from Pound gave BPC a 9-4 advantage. Paris Russell walked to have two runners on the bases. After a wild pitch and a walk, the bases were loaded. Pound scored off another wild pitch and Russell scored from a sacrifice fly to give the Lady Barons an 11-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Edward Waters gathered runs in the sixth and the seventh innings, but Brewton-Parker was able to secure an 11-6 victory in game two.

Inside the Statistics
  • Both teams had 14 hits apiece.
  • Usrey led the team by going 4-for-4 at the plate which included two doubles while also scoring a run.
  • Strickland and Pound both got two hits and two runs each, while Elliott, Wright, Lucas, and Lumley gathered one hit and one run each.
  • Martinez and Russell both scored runs while Wilson and Bradshaw both notched a hit.
  • Kira Altman (10-4) picked up the win and pitched all seven innings. Altman gathered two strikeouts and gave up two walks, 14 hits, and six runs.
