BPC Baseball Falls to No. 3 Grizzlies

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Baseball traveled north to Lawrenceville to take on No. 3-ranked Georgia Gwinnett for a single non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon.

The Barons (17-24) fell to the Grizzlies (36-6) in a 17-8 defeat on the road.

How It Happened

Brewton-Parker opened with a run in the first inning by placing runners on the bags with a single from Carson Kirby and a walk from Kyran Coleman. Kennard Dawson reached on a two-out error which scored Kirby for the 1-0 lead.

Georgia Gwinnett responded with a leadoff triple followed by five more hits as well as a BPC error to push home five runs. The Barons scored another run with a double from Jacob Mantooth who later scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit down to three runs in the second. The Grizzlies put together a pair of RBI singles and a three-run homer to advance to a 10-2 advantage in the bottom half of the frame.

In the third, Coleman led with a double to left center and was pushed to third on a single from Tate Worrell before scoring on a passed ball to score the Barons' third run of the game. GGC followed with an RBI triple and an RBI single to move to a 12-3 lead in the bottom of the third.

Brewton-Parker added a run in the fourth with a loaded-bases walk to move the score to 12-4, leaving the bases loaded to close the inning. Georgia Gwinnett moved back into a 10-run lead in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of sacrifice flies for a 14-4 lead.

BPC scored off an error in the fifth to pull within a single-digit deficit before holding GGC scoreless for the fifth and sixth innings. The Barons battled in the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits as Dawson notched an RBI double and Mantooth capped off with a solo homer to left field for a 14-8 game. A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh and a homer as well as an RBI double in the eighth advanced Georgia Gwinnett to a 17-8 lead and eventually the win.

  • Mantooth led with two extra-base hits while Coleman, Worrell, and Dawson all produced a double.
  • Bryce Morley (1-5) received the loss after starting on the bump and allowing six hits for five earned runs in just one inning pitched.
  • Six other arms appeared on the mound and all seven pitchers totaled for just three strikeouts and six walks for the game.
