MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Men's Basketball faced in-state rival Middle Georgia in a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup on Monday night.
The Barons (8-15, 4-11 SSAC) fell to the Knights (9-12, 5-10 SSAC) in a 71-58 defeat in Gillis Gymnasium.
How It Happened | First Half
The Barons struck first with a layup from
Damarcus Johnson Jr. to open up the half. Over the next five minutes, both teams fought in a 10-10 stretch led by
Dre Burroughs with five points. The Barons were holding onto a two-point edge at the 15:18 mark.
Middle Georgia chipped away at the deficit and managed to claim a 16-15 lead at the 11:24 mark before following up with an 18-17 lead at the 10:56 mark. The Knights continued their momentum with a 15-0 run to put the Barons in a 33-17 hole to close out the half.
How It Happened | Second Half
Lance Smith landed a big dunk to open the scoring for BPC as the Knights took a 4-2 stretch in the opening three minutes of the half. Middle Georgia continued their tear with a 6-2 stretch, increasing the Barons' deficit to 21 with 12:20 left on the clock.
Brewton-Parker picked up a little momentum with an 8-1 stretch led by
Jordan Johnson with six points to cut the deficit to 44-30 with 9:22 left on the clock. Both teams were locked in a back-and-forth battle for the next three minutes. The Barons took a 10-9 stretch cutting the deficit to 13 with 6:41 left in the game.
Middle Georgia found some momentum late as they took a 10-4 run to put the Barons down 65-44 with 2:44 left on the clock. Johnson ended the Knights' run with two shots from behind the arc to cut into the lead. Four points from
Domanic Betancourt, a trey from Blue, and a free throw from
Zsolt Boros ended the game for the Barons as they closed in a 71-58 defeat.
