COCHRAN, Ga. – Brewton-Parker Baseball hit the road for a short trip to Cochran, Ga. to take on (RV) Middle Georgia in the final two games of the weekend series on Saturday afternoon.
The Barons (2-5) split the doubleheader against the Knights (1-2) in a 3-2 game one loss and a 7-3 game two victory at Stuckey Field.
How It Happened | G1 – BPC 2, MGA 3 (7 Inn.)
Carson Kirby was looking to get the bats hot early for the Barons, opening with a double down the left field line and advancing to third on an error to put BPC in a great scoring opportunity. Unfortunately, Brewton-Parker followed with three straight strikeouts to close the inning and to leave Kirby stranded.
Middle Georgia put together a pair of hits and took advantage of two errors, a pair of stolen bases, and a walk to score three runs for an early advantage. The bats were cold for Brewton-Parker for most of the game until the sixth inning when
Drew DeMasi notched an RBI single to center field to post a run. BPC was also gifted a run via an error to cut the deficit to one.
Jack Morris and
Kendell Wade connected for base hits, but the Barons left the pair of runners stranded to close out the top half of the seventh to drop the scheduled seven-inning contest, 3-2.
Inside the Statistics
- Both teams notched four hits apiece and gave up a pair of errors as well.
- Four Barons notched hits with Kirby recording a double and a sacrifice hit as well.
- Brandon Lawrence stole two bases Kennard Dawson and J. Reid Phillips stole a bag each.
- Brandon Russell pitched 5.1 innings and received his first loss of the season, striking out five batters and walking three.
- Ryan Dopson closed the game, pitching the final two at-bats.
How It Happened | G2 – BPC 7, MGA 3
The Barons flipped the script in the second game, securing a solid 7-3 victory over the Knights by starting with a three-hit second inning to open the game. After a leadoff walk,
Michael Son tripled to bring in Dawson before DeMasi singled. Son managed to score on a double play from Morris which was followed by a base hit from
Jacob Mantooth to close out the inning with a 2-0 lead in favor of BPC.
Brewton-Parker added to the tally in the top of the third, scoring four runs on three hits to move to a 6-0 lead. Kirby was hit by a pitch to start and Lawrence was walked to put a pair of runners on the bags before
Tate Worrell connected for an RBI double.
Dawson followed up with an RBI single while Son trailed with an RBI double for the 5-0 advantage. BPC moved to a six-run lead with a sacrifice fly from DeMasi, but also left a trio of runners on the bases to close the inning.
MGA finally responded with an RBI single in the bottom of the third to gain a run back and added another in the fifth with a solo homer to cut the deficit to four runs. The Barons added one final run to the total in the top of the sixth, connecting for three hits in the process.
Lawrence and Dawson produced base hits and were followed up by an RBI single from Son for the 7-2 lead. Brewton-Parker did a great job to close out the final three innings, holding the five-run cushion to secure the weekend series 2-1.
Inside the Statistics
- BPC held an 11-6 edge in hits and was led by Son's three hits and three RBIs.
- Son produced a double and a triple as well.
- Worrell, Dawson, and Mantooth all produced two hits each.
- Brewton-Parker gave up three errors.
- Ty Cook (1-0) earned the win, tossing 5.2 innings and striking out 10 batters in the process.
- Four other arms made appearances on the mound with Carlos Rodriguez closing the final inning and notching two strikeouts.
